Upper Hutt school s new name, Te Kura o Hau Karetu, honours local Māori history

Te Kura o Hau Karetu is a primary school, with a roll of 111, as at July 1, 2020. More than half of its students are Māori. During the past two years the Upper Hutt school cluster, which Te Kura o Hau Karetu is a part of, had been working together to find out more about the city s history. Through their research they discovered that a pā had existed on a bend in the river near the school called Te Haukaretu. However, after European settlers moved into the area it became known as Māoribank. Wellington said the name Māoribank could have negative connotations: “It started us thinking actually we need to change this, it’s not right. The name Te Haukaretu is much more respectful, meaningful and emotive.”
