February rains and mist have turned threat for the mango crop in state this year.
HUBBALLI: Unseasonal showers could not have been more ill-timed this year: The rainfall that the state received in February has extracted a steep price in the form of a drastic reduction in the yield of the mango crop. The horticulture department had expected a yield of 14 tonnes across the state, but the unseasonal showers forced the officials to revise the estimate to nine lakh tonnes. The reduction in the yield is likely to leave a huge gap in the supply chain, pushing the price of the quintessential tropical fruit up this summer.

Need a mango cooperative society: Dr K Sudhakar

Speaking at the
Mango Buyer and Farmer meet organised by Karnataka State Mango Development & Marketing Cooperation on Wednesday, Health and Medical Education Minister
Dr K Sudhakar stressed the need for a
Cooperative Society for Mango Storage & Preservation.
Citing the successful example of
sugarcane farmers model, the minister explained, “Mango needs quick market disposal as it can’t be stored for long period. There is no proper storage facilities, including cold storage in Chikkaballapur and Kolar districts. Sugarcane
farmers in north Karnataka have established a cooperative society to store and preserve their produce. Similarly, there is a need here to establish a society for the storage and preservation of mangoes. This is also in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.”
