Soon after finishing morning prayers, Suhail Ahmad, an Anantnag resident, travels to nearby districts in his car in search of mutton for his sister who recently delivered a baby. He buys it at Rs 600, a kilogram from various butchers who work in the early morning hours.
Since November 2020, the mutton dealers and administration are at loggerheads over mutton prices. Last year, the divisional administration proposed Rs 480 for mutton per kilogram which the dealers did not agree citing that they cannot afford to sell at “such low rate,” resulting in the shutting down of mutton shops and severe mutton shortage across Kashmir.

The impasse between the government and local traders in Kashmir over the prices of mutton continues as almost a week has passed since the two parties held a meeting last Saturday in order to bring an end to the row, which has now caused a shortage of meat in the markets.
According to local media reports, the Divisional Administration is firm on not showing any leniency to the mutton dealers in the Valley, who have rejected the government-proposed rate of Rs 515 per kg for the meat.
Inefficient bureaucracy adding to miseries
According to officials, the invoice value of petrol is estimated around Rs 40 per litre, after taxes both state and central and dealers commission the price goes uptoRs 92.7 per litre.
“The government of Jammu and Kashmir must act quickly and reduce taxes to lower petroleum rates which are increasing at a rapid speed,” said co-chairman of Kashmir Economic Alliance, Farooq Ahmad Dar.
He said that the economy of Kashmir is facing many hardships due to losses it incurred during the past two years, therefore it is imperative upon the government to lower taxes so that common people will reap its benefits.
