House Republicans gathered Thursday morning at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C. to pay tribute to America s first responders who ve given their lives in the line of duty.
Joining Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy for the event coinciding with National Police Week, Florida Congresswoman Kat Cammack challenged Democrats to get the facts before they call for police departments to be defunded. I d like to talk to you today, not as a member of congress, but as the wife of a first responder, said Cammack, whose husband is a SWAT medic. On 3 March, the House of Representatives passed H.R.1 For the People Act of 2021 largely along party lines by a vote of 220-210. All GOP lawmakers and one Democratic representative, Bennie Thompson of Mississippi, voted against the legislation, which was previously denounced as a federal government takeover by the Republicans.
In 2019, the GOP shot the For the People Act down in the US Senate. Having gained a slim majority in both chambers of the US Congress following the 2020 elections, the Democrats reintroduced the legislation in early January. Now the bill is heading to the Senate floor.
