Nurses are demanding safety for expectant mothers after the recent decision to close HealthAlliance-Clinton Hospital's birthing center.

Naval Aviator Radioman 3rd Class Walter “Uncle Bert” Mintus was honored during Mount Soledad's annual Memorial Day Ceremony on Monday.

Residents from the San Diego region and elsewhere honored those who gave their lives in military service to the nation during several Memorial Day events Monday in the Mira Mesa neighborhood, Mt. Soledad Veterans Memorial and at the USS Midway Museum.

“Look at the ones that had enough pride to give up their lives for this country,” said Roberta “Randy” Tidmore, USMC veteran, WWII.

Mintus "Uncle Bert" was part of a bombing mission targeting a Japanese base in Palau when his Avenger warplane was shot down just one day shy of his 23rd birthday.

Radioman Walter Mintus, who was shot down in the Pacific during World War II and his remains weren't found until 2016, will be recognized with a plaque on Mount Soledad on Memorial Day.
