went down to the city. i think it's crazy that they would do that. over slurpees? it doesn't make sense. >> reporter: it gained greater attention amid greater concerns about downtown security. blocking traffic on st. patrick's day weekend. the same weekend a tourist was beaten and stripped naked. >> my detectives are working very hard. >> and a press conference, police said extra enforcement is already in place, including 50 more officers. new patrols, involving better police and better camera technologies. >> you're going to have issues that happen. you'll have large groups that come into downtown. what people have to know is that the baltimore police department is prepared. and we know how to respond to those. >> reporter: and late today, we did hear back from school officials. they did tell us that they are working with city police to identify the students involved in that incident at the 7- eleven. live at headquarters, mike hellgren, wjz eyewitness news. >> mike, thank you. police said today that 19 people were murdered in baltimore in may. one of those murders happened on east preston street last night. a 28-year-old man was shot in the chest and died. two others were also wounded at that location. there's some of the eight victims shot within a matter of hours. so far, no arrests in any of the cases. >> another concern at the inner harbor tonight. police are searching for a sex offense suspect caught spying in a women's rest room. surveillance pictures caught the man going in and out of the bathroom at harbor place. a 15-year-old girl tells detectives she noticed somebody taking her picture from underneath the stall. anybody who recognizes this man, it's a pretty good picture, should call police. an arrest in a series of attacks targeting craigslist users in baltimore. denise is in the newsroom with more on the man accused in this scheme. denise? >> reporter: well, kai, police caught the robbery suspect at a library. police say 26-year-old david brown was using a public computer at the time of his arrest, they believe, to set up more attacks. police believe brown used craigslist to lure potential buyers to northwest baltimore and rob them of cash and valuables. they say he's responsible for at least four robberies, all on calloway street. the most recent victim thought he was responding to an online ad, but was robbed at gunpoint of $2,000 cash. kai? >> police are trying to determine if brown is involved in any other incidents, criminal charges are pending. nearly 2,000 workers at the sparrow -- sparrows point steel plant are preparing to lose their jobs, as the plant's owner searches for potential buyers. wjz is live. weijia jiang has more on the company's financial struggles and the difficult road ahead for the area. >> for so many decades, the plant has been the heart of the entire community. so when it stops running, people who work and live there, worry everything else could shut down with it. >> reporter: this steel mill at sparrows point was once a thriving operation. maryland's biggest employer. >> boom when i was here. >> reporter: but soon, it will be a mill that once was. >> everybody thought they had a perfect job here. but it went bankrupt on them. they got nothing. >> reporter: owner r.g. steel has announced its laying off nearly 2,000 workers, starting june 4th. >> though disappointed, state leaders say they're not surprised. the company has been struggling financially, since rg steel bought the plants last year. >> it's not the employees who are the problem. it's the market price for steel and it's the cost of raw materials. >> reporter: the baltimore county executive is hoping another company will buy the mill from rg still, who explains the cuts are the results of continued uncertainty, regarding the outcome of discussions with our lenders. >> reporter: which means anxiety for business owners like gabriel lesson. >> i think it's going to get really bad. >> she runs edge rock cafe. >> sad to say. but i don't know what's going to happen. so it might be we end up having to cut back some. >> russian says, her own future depends on what happens to the mill. no deals are done. >> and in the meantime, the maryland department of labor is helping those workers with unemployment benefits, training opportunities and, of course, looking for a new job. reporting live, weijia jiang, wjz eyewitness news. >> weijia, thank you. rg still is also closing operations at its plant in ohio and west virginia. the man who confessed to the 1979 murder of etan pates is being arraigned today from his hospital bed. he's under close watch after his arrest in the case that stumped new york city police for 33 years. dick brennan reports for wjz from new york. >> reporter: the new jersey man who confessed to murdering etan pates was hospitalized this morning, to get medication for an undisclosed condition. he was also given a psychological evaluation. hours later, the wife and daughter of 51-year-old pedro hern hernandez arrived at the courthouse, refusing to answer questions. >> were you surprised by this? or did you know? did you expect his confession? >> reporter: hernandez admits to luring the boy into the store where he was working, taking him into the basement, choking him to death, and throwing his body away in the trash. but police have not revealed a motive. >> legal expermits say the lack of physical evidence and eyewitness testimony make its almost impossible for police to verify hernandez's confession. >> reporter: john miller says hernandez's story may not be enough to convict him. >> a jury wants to see evidence beyond that, especially if the defendant's lawyer is going to challenge that confession, saying my client is mentally ill, he made it up. >> reporter: hernandez was arrested after police received a tip. authorities say he told relatives years ago that he killed a child in new york. the suspect's brother-in-law says the confession can help bring closure to etan's parents. >> they don't have to suffer anymore, in wondering whether he's alive or what happened or who killed him. >> reporter: etan's parents were said to be surprised and overwhelmed with the arrest. they were not expected to appear at the arrangement-- arraignment today. in new york city, dick brennan, wjz eyewitness news. >> because of etan's disappearance 33 years ago, may 25th is now known as national missing children's day. still no verdict in the john edwards corruption trial. the former presidential candidate is at the north carolina courthouse for the sixth day of deliberations. the judge just dismissed the jury until tuesday. after warning them not to discuss the case outside of the jury room. edwards is accused of using campaign money to hide his pregnant mistress during his white house run in 2008. right now, millions of people are hitting the roads for memorial day weekend. let's take a live look at the beach traffic route. at 50, at sandy point. now, triple a predicts, 35 million americans are traveling to their holiday destinations, with nearly 700,000 of those drivers here in maryland. we hope anyone who is out is enjoying the beautiful weather. so far, so good, with sunny and warm conditions around the state. let's check in with meteorologist tim williams and bob turk. they're updating our temperatures and the holiday weekend forecast. bob? >> quick look at radar. not much going on. looks like what we're seeing today is probably what we're seeing all weekend long. a few very, very widely scattered showers popping up in the afternoon. maybe a couple of spots get a thunderstorm. this one right near cambridge. and between just west of trapp e and one northwest of debton there. you see not up going on. this same pattern all weekend long. except it will be getting warmer. temperature-wise now, we're at 81. 88 in cumberland. ocean city at 72. and d.c. at 84. temperatures right now, running about 2 degrees warmer than they were yesterday. but oakland is now 11 degrees warmer. i think tomorrow, probably go maybe 5, 6, 7 degrees warmer than we are now. we have a little heat wave headed our way. tim has more on that coming up right now. tim? >> the average temperature for this time of year, for this date is about 76 degrees. and as bob mentioned, we're expected to soar right on past that. even with the wind coming in a little off the water. that typically cools us down. but it is going to be still very warm and very humid. hot, humid air is going to stay with us. the cooler air is going to be separated. and up near the great lakes, we are going to be locked in. this heat pump, right on thru memorial day monday, with temperatures right around 90 degrees, even if it's said, the national index is not 90. but the heat index will be. maryland's most popular beach resort is gearing up for a flood of tourists. gigi barnett reports from the eastern shore. the unofficial start of summer means big business for ocean city. >> reporter: 9 out of 10 travelers will go by car this holiday weekend. some of them are ocean city bound. triple a says one reason this weekend is a good time to travel, low gas prices. >> reporter: at the start of the holiday weekend, ocean city beckons. >> this is beautiful. this is perfect. >> reporter: and that's just what the city expects over the next three days. there's a combination of favorable factors that will lure customers and cash to the boardwalk. >> we work all year long to make sure we're prepared for the summer, prepared for memorial day weekend. we're geared up to have a big year, with a little luck from the weather. i think that is exactly what is going to happen. >> reporter: according to triple a, 89% of travelers will hit the roads this weekend. it's a good thing gas prices are lower this month than last month. >> paid $3.49. >> you like that? >> much better than it was a few weeks ago. >> i don't know how much worse it can get. but it can only get better, hopefully. >> reporter: and together a slightly improving economy. >> we had a good weekend last weekend with the cruisers. and hopefully this weekend will be as big as that. that was a phenomenal weekend, actually. >> reporter: a sunshiny weather forecast. >> on vacation, you want good weather. you want to be out to enjoy the sights. >> reporter: and predictions for a prosperous summer are as bright as the forecast. >> reporter: police have a warning for drivers this weekend. slow down and put the cell phones away. they are out in force. at the bay bridge, i'm gigi barnett, wjz eyewitness news. >> and though this is the start of the season, the fourth of july holiday actually attracts the largest crowd to ocean city. oh, so nice down there. >> imagine some salty thrashers fries down there. >> and a margarita. >> i like that. still ahead on eyewitness news at 5:00. wrongly accused. the emotional victory for a california man, convicted of a crime that never even happened. asking for help. what's happening to the charity started by jerry sandusky. i'm alex demetrick. coming up, stop at the court. a hitchhiker from china with a destructive appetite. that story as eyewitness news continues. memorial day weekend kicks off, with sunny weather. don't miss the updated first warning forecast with bob. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, it's partly sunny, 81 degrees in central maryland right now. the complete first warning weather forecast is coming up. >> it definitely has a cute name. the tumbling flower beetle. but it's got a nasty appetite. as alex demetrick reports, fortunately, it was stopped in time at the port of baltimore. >> reporter: consider the scale. and the odds look like a long shot. in all of the shipping containers coming into the port of baltimore, inspectors check one from china, packed with steel coils and found one bug the size of a finger nail. the tumbling flower beetle. >> we found the pest in the container. it's what we call a hitch hiking pest. just went into the the container, went overseas for the ride. >> reporter: u.s. investigators say it's the first time a beetle from china has been found at the port. the invasive beetle is a threat. >> they can cause damage to agriculture crops, natural resources and the environment. >> reporter: to understand the importance of stopping this beetle, all you have to do is look at all of the other insects that managed to get in. in western maryland, hemlock trees, hundreds of years old, have to be injected with pesticide to kill another beetlez from asia, before it kills the tree. then there's the asian stink bug, which has cause the millions of dollars in crop losses. last but not least, the emerald ash borer from china infests most of the state. the potential damage? >> millions and millions of dollars. we estimate the emerald ash bore could create as much as $270 million worth of damage in maryland. >> reporter: luckily, the tumbling flower beetle, which gets its name from jerky movements, did not escape notice at the port. >> and they can't check all containers, so they use a special targeting formula to select containers for inspection. if you're waiting for someone to get home from work. >> things are definitely busy on the roadways. on the harrisburg expressway in the northbound direction. heavy traffic there, from shawan road to belfast. 95 there, a couple of tricky spots there. busy in the northbound direction. past the beltway. southbound also heavy. from 895 past 32. as far as the beltway itself goes, on the top side inner loop. so slow there from park heights to harford road. the west side inner loop, that has thinned out a bit. accidents include merit boulevard. east pratt at light street. loch raven at windmere. also falls road at west northern parkway. you can see, there's a look at 50 eastbound. sandy point. things are a bit busy in that direction. this traffic report is brought to you by bill's carpet, hard wood, and laminate, too. you can call them at 1-877-75 1- 877-75-bills. back to you. >> thanks, kristy. they served america with honor and distinction. and eyewitness news had the privilege of talking with several tuskegee airmen who, were working hard to tell their story. >> reporter: the tuskegee airmen were the first african american pilots. they flew in world war ii. and they were used to determine if blacks had the aptitude to fly. >> this is something as predisijious as a -- prestigious as a piece of paper that came out. >> originally, there were more than 950 tuskegee airmen. only the fighter pilots saw combat. >> they were a great group of young men, who in 1941, volunteered to save their country, the united states of america. >> it's often said, the tuskegee airmen fought two battles. the three tuskegee airmen here, all wearing jackets, live in maryland. >> at the time i finished in 1941. >> and last month, baltimore county leaders honored two tuskegee airmen, for their service and sacrifice. >> the overall message is, if these gentlemen could succeed, under the conditions that they had to train under and everything, and live under in this country in the 1930s and 40s, hey, that's a success story. these guys are heroes. they were winners. >> any bitterness about what you experienced? >> well, you have the ugly side you look at. but the good side far exceeds it. >> william broadletter, who you just saw, is 87 years old. he was youngest, by the way, tuskegee airmen when he enlisted. the other tuskegee airmen, samuel byer and lemmual lewie are 92. there were many others part of the program. >> how great for you to talk to them. >> it was an experience and honor to talk to them. >> i love to hear their stories. we have an incredible weekend on the way. hot summer weather. 81 now. winds south and southeast at 6. dew points down 1 degree. but that's not going to make it any less humid this weekend. it's going to be hot, humid, summer weekend after this. [ laughs ] everyone grows with miracle-gro. i'm done. my skin's so raw. try new gold bond friction defense stick. it soothes skin and reduces friction. thanks, jimmy. think gold bond. ♪ this stuff works it is just before 5:30. 81 degrees and partly sunny. good evening, everybody. thank you for staying with wjz eyewitness news. here are some of the stories people are talking about tonight. an emotional departure for local soldiers, deploying-- deploying to afghanistan. they said their goodbyes today at the aberdeen proving ground. >> reporter: a 60-member maryland army national guard unit prepares to deploy. their mission to afghanistan will help move troop supplies and equipment over the next year. >> that went ashore at d-day and world war ii. these maryland guardsmen have answered their nation's call. >> it is a difficult moment for troops and their families. they prepare for this day, but sometimes the reality of it hits hard. there are hugs and kisses to give. photos to take. and goodbyes that break your heart. this mom has two sons in the maryland national guard. one stays, one goes. these brothers will be apart for the holidays and other celebrations, but their mom has a special tradition to honor the one deployed. >> we always set a place for them. we always put them first. we're always at the head of the table because we know the sacrifices they're making. >> reporter: another family also has two sons enlisted and 21 leaves today. >> probably without the 10 total deployments our family has had. i hate to say it's a team. but we have been there many times. we just want them back safe. >> reporter: the soldiers are deploying with six chinook aircraft. and after one last, long hug to a loved one, they start their mission with a final salute to those on the ground. >> and the soldiers will be gone for about 10 months, first heading to fort hood to train. then they go to southern afghanistan. many who left today are on their second or third deployment. >> we're following some breaking news right now. the deaths of three family members found dead at a kemp county farm are ruled accidental. the bodies of 48-year-old glen nolt and two of his sons were recovered from a manure pit on a dairy farm in kennedyville. the autopsy shows all three victims died of asphyxiation. closeon nolt had an additional cause of death, listed as multiple injuries. detectives think the injuries were inflicted by a large propeller inside the manure pit. the days are numbered by the charity, created by former penn state assistant football coach, jerry sandusky. vic is in the newsroom with more. >> the second mile foundation is seeking court approval to shut down. because of the sex scandal by sandusky. second mile claims it has been financially crippled since sandusky was charged. the charity is asking a judge to allow it to transfer programs and assets to another program. sandusky has pleaded innocent to more than 60 counts. >> san dusk sescheduled to head to trial in june. a stunning reversal of a rape conviction in long beach, california. a judge overturns the case on evidence a former high school football star was wrongly accused a decade ago. the attack never even happened. >> reporter: 26-year-old brian banks broke down in court, when he heard the judge's decision. bank system now legally cleared of a rape conviction he's lived with for 10 years. banks was a promising 16-year- old long beach high school football star when he was accused in 2002 of kidnapping and raping a girl on campus. instead of going to usc on a football scholarship, he served five years in prison, then another five years on probation, as a registered sex offender. >> i may not ever get the answers as to why i was supposed to go through what i went through. but i know that i'm here today and i remain unbroken. >> reporter: during a videotaped meeting at a private investigator's office last year, the accuser, juaneta gibson, admitted, the crime never happened. >> did he rape you? >> no. >> reporter: gibson agreed, her sexual encounter with banks was consensual. but she refused to tell prosecutors becausesly-- because she didn't want to give back a million and a half dollar settlement over lack security. >> we thought it was important to bring the truth to light in this case. and the truth is that brian committed no crime that day. >> reporter: with his conviction overturned, banks is now focusing his energy on the future. >> this is all that matters to me is my family and my freedom. that's it. because it's been a long time coming. it's been a silent 10 years. >> reporter: he is training daily in hopes to one day play for the nfl. teresa garcia, week eyewitness news. -- wjz eyewitness news. >> banks said he pleaded no contest to the original rape and kidnapping charges, in exchange for a lesser prison term because he was scared. we have an update on breaking news we first told you about at 4:00. moments ago, an armed man releases the hostages he had been holding inside a real estate office in valparaiso, indiana. however, the man remains in a standoff with police. the gunman said someone owed him money. so far, no one has been hurt. an american airlines jet passenger is in custody. it had just landed in miami. that's when ryan schneider rushed toward the plane's cockpit. the fbi says he refused to obey flight attendants. no one was hurt. he has a court appearance tuesday. flying should be a bit easier this weekend for holiday travelers. the tsa is monitoring security screenings for passengers over 75 years old. danielle nottingham reports from washington. >> reporter: at age 74, marvin rosen is happy to take his shoes off when he goes through airport security. but it's not easy. >> i have a problem walking. so i have a problem bending down and getting my shoes and picking them up. >> reporter: his wife phyllis had a hip replaced. so she's used to spending lots of time with security screeners. >> i know the tsa are only doing their jobs. but sometimes, it was a little upsetting because they really pat you down. >> reporter: it's experiences like these the transportation security administration hopes to cut down. >> people that are over 75, and young people, 12 and below, really, those folks, oppose a relatively small risk. >> reporter: the tsa is expanding a program that allows passengers, ages 75 and older, to go through security with their shoes, belts and light coats on. >> the new screening procedures will also allow elderly passengers to get a second pass through airport scanners if they set off an alarm. if screeners still detect a problem, then seniors may have to take off their shoes and jackets. >> they'll have a better opportunity to get through the process without having a patdown. but again, this is not a free pass. >> reporter: the changes follow outrage over highly-publicized incidents, like the strip search of 85-year-old lenore zimmer pan, last december. >> i mean, who can imagine such a thing could happen? >> i'm fine. >> what are you picking up today? >> i'm picking up crabs, corn on the cob and a few pieces of fruit. >> reporter: tomatoes, strawberries, and much more. it's crab time in maryland. >> no need to worry, though. if you want crabs. >> no. no need to worry. we've got plenty of -- plenty. crabs are good quality now. we like throwing that in. throwing horse shoes, eating crabs and telling lies. >> reporter: ron matz, wjz eyewitness news. >> sorry. i'm drooling a little bit. analysts say the chesapeake bay's crab population, the blue crab, that is, is alt its highest level since 1993. it's seen a 63% increase over last year. looks like it's going to be hot for those weekend cookout fist you're going to do the grill instead of the crab. temperatures are going to climb even higher. meteorologist tim williams and bob turk show us the forecast tomorrow. and through memorial day. we'll start inside with bob. >> you couldn't ask for better summer weather this weekend, just in time for the holiday. take a look at tomorrow. it's going to start off maybe a little fog in some spots. but getting up to the upper 80s. very slight chance. some place in the region will see a pop-up shower. but as i said, only about 10 to 15% chance around the region. tim has a look at that five-day forecast. take a look at these numbers. tim? >> well, it does stay warm right on through. and even if we don't hit the actual numbers as far as temperatures are concerned, with the dew points, humidity levels and the heat, the heat index is going to still make it feel like about 90 degrees sunday. 92 monday. 88 on tuesday. and 86 on wednesday. with overnight lows in the mid- to upper 60s. it's going to feel summer like, definitely. and in today's energy saver tip for the day, are you looking to take advantage of a memorial day sale to get new appliances. look for the energy star label. energy star products meet strict efficiency guidelines to set the -- set by the u.s. department of energy and the environmental protection agency. for more information on how you can become an energy saver, go to wjz.com, scroll down the right-hand side of the page, and click on the special section. now, back inside. >> thanks, tim. crews in alaska are beginning an overwhelming cleanup project. they're removing 30 tons of debris, washed ashore from japan's tsunami. john blackstone reports. this is only the beginning. >> reporter: the driftwood on montague island shows it captures whatever is carried by the wind and the tide. but what is carried onto the beaches here now is different. a lot television is plastic. barrels and bottles, light enough to be carried on the wind, across thousands of miles of ocean. while it's impossible to say for certain that any particular piece came from japan, many items carry japanese writing. big blocks of yellow foam, never seen here before, are believed to be remnants of insulation used in many japanese houses. chris pallister knows these beaches as well. >> the influx of debris. >> it's many, many times what we would find on a normal season. it's just overwhelming. >> this just started. and it's going to get tens of thousands of miles of coastline are going to get debris on it. >> pallister is a beach monitor, who spends every summer, organizing cleanup crews for the gulf of alaska shoreline. what has happened to the beaches this year has hit him hard. >> sorry. i mean, this is real. this is real. our crew have worked for 10 years to clean this mess up. and now we're back to square 1. >> reporter: japan is estimating 5 million tons of debris was swept out to sea but that most of it sank, leaving 1 1/2 million tons floating. a stolen iphone automatically uploads photos to facebook, and the thief has no idea. katie mccaffrey had her iphone taken,a board a disney cruise ship, when photos of her missing phone appeared on -- facebook, she created an album with the thief's pictures shoovmenty managed to identify the crewmember's name nelson from a name tag. he's been put on administrative leave. and disney is investigating. check in with eyewitness news at 6:00 for these stories and more coming up. denise is standing by with a preview. craigslist arrest. police say he lured in baltimore users, then robbed them. find out the bizarre place police believe he carried out his crime. plus. : i'm mike schuh in towson. tens of thousands of students are graduating maryland college this weekend. a new study shows, baltimore is not a bad place to get a job. details next. check in for these stories all the breaking news. now, back to mary and kai. still to come tonight on wjz eyewitness news. one orioles player, close to a huge contract. sports director mark viviano is live at camden yards, where the o's are getting ready for a home stretch. hi, mark. >> taking on kansas city. that guy is adam jones. on the brink of a big deal. we'll hear from the orioles' star center fielder, when eyewitness news continues. ,,,,, ,, we gotta sell the car. where would we even start?
