The Whangārei Record Collectors Fair is on again this month.

Vinyl records are one of the few growth markets in music in recent years, and Northland vinyl hunters are in for a treat with the Whangārei Record Collectors Fair on again this month. The fair, put on by Indigo Records, will be at OneOneSix, Bank St, from 10am to 4pm on April 17. Steve Parrish, from Indigo Records, has more than 20,000 albums, EPs and singles with many on sale at the fair. The fair is supported by Creative Northland, OneOneSix and its in-house Beagle Radio (88.1), and the keen customers.

A police investigation is underway into a three-car smash near Moerewa on Monday night which claimed the lives of two Northlanders.
They were Maudie Dianne Pickering, aged 64, and Iharaira Trevon Maxi Hoterene-Rakete, aged 25. Both were from the Whangārei area.

Firefighters were last night hoping to fully contain Northland s biggest fire so far this summer before the forecast onset of extreme fire conditions this weekend.
As of yesterday the Pipiwai Rd fire had razed just under 180ha of young pine forest. It was being fought by six helicopters using monsoon buckets and about 65 forestry and Department of Conservation workers on the ground.
Three bulldozers and two diggers were cutting fire breaks around the perimeter.

Firefighters are battling to control a massive 130ha wildfire in pine forest south of Kawakawa before forecast high winds hit later today.
The blaze started about 3.30pm on Thursday on Pipiwai Rd, between James Rd and Lovatt Rd, about midway between Whangārei and Kaikohe.
Seven helicopters got to work at first light this morning using monsoon buckets with 70 forestry contractors from around the North helping firefighters on the ground.
A huge column of smoke can be seen from many kilometres away.
