be careful what you wish for. ted cruz imagined what a race would be like without donald trump and now he knows. indeed, for all of these candidates, having a chance to be onstage, sure, it gave them more time in the spotlight, more time to talk, but it also put focus more squarely on them, and sometimes in an uncomfortable way. for a debate stage absent of donald trump, it was hardly a debate, absent of donald trump. from the very first question -- >> before we get to the issue, let's address the elephant not in the room tonight. >> reporter: to the very first joke. >> let me say, i'm a maniac, and everyone on this stage is stupid, fat and ugly. and, ben, you're a terrible surgeon. now that we've gotten the donald trump portion out of the way -- >> reporter: to a completely changed dynamic, where with no trump lightning rod, other candidates had to dodge bolts. >> i would note that the last four questions have been, rand, please attack tez, marco please attack ted, chris please attack ted, jeb, please attack ted. let me just say this -- >> it is a debate, sir. >> well, no. no. a debate actually is a policy issue but i will say this, gosh, if you guys ask one more mean question, i may have to leave the stage. >> reporter: and some candidates got flat out more attention. rand paul questioning hillary clinton's values relative to her husband's infidelities. >> i do think that her position as promoting women's rights and fairness to women in the workplace, that if what bill clinton did, any ceo in our country did, with an intern, with a 22-year-old, 21-year-old intern in their office, they would be fired. they would never be hired again. >> reporter: the most extraordinary moment of the night, even came on an issue donald trump put front and center -- immigration. it led to an all-out melee. jeb bush versus marco rubio. >> i'm kind of confused because he was the sponsor of the gang of eight bill that it did require a bunch of thresholds but ultimately allowed for citizenship over an extended period of time. that's a fact. and he asked me to support that. and i supported him, because i think people, when you're elected, you need to do things. >> interesting jeb mentions the book. the book you changed your position on immigration. >> so did you. >> so did you, marco. >> you wrote a book, you changed your position from -- >> no. >> you wrote a book, you changed your position from a path to citizenship to a path to legalization. >> reporter: rand paul versus ted cruz. >> i was there and i saw the debate. i saw ted cruz say, we'll take citizenship off the table and then the bill will pass, and i'm for the bill. but it's a fallne nefalseness. awe then tifaun thenticity prob. >> and john adams famouslies they facts are stubborn things. the facts are simple, when that battle was waged, my friend senator rubio chose to stand with barack obama and harry reid and chuck schumer and support amnesty and i stood alongside jeff sessions and steve king and we led the fight against amnesty. >> this is the lie that ted's campaign is built on and rand touch eed upon. . he's the most conservative guy and everyone else is a rhino. the truth, throughout this campaign you've been willing to say or do anything in order to get votes. >> chris christie versus everyone. >> i feel like -- i feel like i need -- i feel like i need a washington english dictionary converter. right? >> reporter: ted cruz, marco rubio, chris christie, rand paul, jeb bush, all throwing punches on immigration, all taking hits. one candidate who was not mixed up in that food fight, donald trump. he could sit and watch the whole thing, and now you have to wonder, carol, does he show up to the debate next week in new hampshire? >> it will be interesting. a question for you, because i thought the moderators used a tool that was very effective. used clips of the candidates' past statements that seemed contradictory and forcing the candidates to answer to them. did the candidates expect that? >> reporter: look, i didn't expect it, because i know in past debate cycles and past situations often something campaigns negotiate out of a debate. you say you know what? if we're going to do this you can't use video clips for exactly that reason. obviously fox did it, it must not have been something off the table. when i saw that to me it said, this was designed for donald trump. that was the reason fox had that in there, because you can imagine the video montage fox prepared for donald trump on so many of the issues he's talked about in the past, where he's got a different position in the present. >> i can, actually. john berman, reporting live from des moines. thank you. donald trump's rival, taunting foxes main event. here's the republican debate. watch as goobal map takes us to the trump rally a few miles away at drake university. fox eventually apologized for its treatment of him, trump says. we can't confirm that but here's what trump had to say. >> i just didn't think this was a fair process, and by the time they apologized, i said, look, the problem is, we now have a big event scheduled -- >> reporter: on the phone they apologized? is that what the phone call was about? >> fox could no the have been nicer. >> reporter: you got anapologiz? >> i don't want to say. >> okay. trump, ever the showman clearly reveled in the spotlight all to himself. >> look at all the cameras. like the academy awards. this is like the academy awards. this is the academy awards! we're actually told we have more cameras than they do by quite a bit. we wouldn't have even been here if it weren't for our vets and are vets are being mistreated. i didn't know we were going to raise $5 million. we actually raised close to $6 million, to be totally honest, and i have to say, a lot more to come. >> trump blazing his own trail leaving behind a crowded trail in iowa and instead moving on to new hampshire. the head of the nation's first primaries. cnn's senior white house correspondent jim acosta has more on that. good morning, jim. >> reporter: gorn, carol. right. as it was put at last night's debate, the elephant not in the room and stands to reason a lot of republican vuser were using flashback or prevent channel button to switch bath and forth between the debate and the donald trump event. now, while donald trump was raising money for veterans last night at this event, he said that $6 million were raised overall. $500,000 on that new website set up to raise money for veterans causes. this was really about putting fox news in its place. teaching fox news a lesson, for donald trump, and he basically said as much at the start of last night's event. here's what he had to say. >> i didn't want to be here, i have to be honest. i wanted to be about five minutes away. and i've enjoyed that. all the online polls said i did very well with the debates and had a kick with it, but you have to stick up for your rights. when you're treated badly, you have to stick up for your rights. >> reporter: that was probably the biggest applause line of the night, and just to add to what was a good night for donald trump, he had the two previous iowa caucus winners with him. rick santorum and mike huckabee. rick santorum saying he didn't want to stand in front of the donald trump for president signs because he was still running for president. the trump campaign sk whoing forward to their organization for the iowa caucuses. i talked to the campaign manager about this who says that they do have a plan. contrary, he said, to press reports that the trump campaign has not really been planning for the iowa caucuses. he even said they're not importing people from texas. all of their ground force was from iowa. a tweet. for senator ted cruz and, carol, to the point you and john berman were talking about, will donald trump participate in future debates? lewendowski made no bones about it. he will participate in futcher debates. this was just about fox news and the statement put out by the tv network they thought were very insulting by the words of lewendowski egregious. it says something about the state of the race, he's here in new hampshire with just 78 hours to go before the caucuses. >> thank you. and director for senator ted cruz and mike shields former chief of staff for the former republican committee. welcome to both of you. >> good morning. >> good morning. >> amanda, talk about the front page of the "des moines register." saw john berman holding it up, headline, "rough night for cruise." not something you want to see days before the caucuses. the paper said not much worked for cruz. not attacks on the media, prepared jokes about trump. nothing. so did trump's absence expose the real croods? the real cruz? >> here's the thing. i don't think the debate changed much of anything as all. certainly more people were attacking ted cruz in trump's absence. my bigger beef with the debate, give your cnn editors credit. they made it seem a lot more exciting than it was. what was revealed was, in fact, ow di dependent fox is on donald trump. a republican voter, who irkas about ut in process, i resent the fact our political debates have become subject for a battle of egos between two new york billionaires. a lot was missing last night because the moderators didn't know what to do without trump. asked the same tired questions, we got the same tired answers, and the biggest event of night was, again, cruz and rubio fighting over the gang of eight bill. heard it all before. chris christie how he couldn't follow the legislative debate before. nothing changed in this debate which is a big black mark on fox because the previous debates have. >> and, mike, i will say that i didn't hear much actual policy discussed. at least when it came to the economy. and how exactly the candidates would take care of isis, except they would put them, well, marco rubio would put them in guantanamo bay after he roended them all up bud didn't say how. >> i agree. a rerun of what we've seen before. the candidates are where they're going to be. i don't think anyone is trying to shake things up too much other than, of course, donald trump. i think as a campaign operative we've seen if you're the front-runner it's better to not be at a debate. i don't know if that's why he did that. i don't think any of us knows. the debate was people staying where they are, saying what they've said before and now really what the operatives are looking at is turnout. how many will show up in the iowa caucuses? a lot of team are still undecided. a tradition in iowa. used to getting to meet the candidates, all here and sit back a little and a, well, i'm not sure. i met a number of voters still sort of on the fence. it's a matter of appealing to those folks, those undecided voters and how many will show up? 121,000 republicans that showed up in the last iowa caucus in 2012, a record. everyone assumes it will be higher this time, turnout, because you have so many candidates, so much money. how much higher does it go? gets up to 17150, 160, polls sa benefits trump. get the lower propensity voters to show up and maybe marco rubio. people not knowing what the turnout will be i agree, sort of a stay pat debate last night. >> the weirdest thing that happened last night, at least in my mind, was when rick santorum and mike huckabee showed up alongside donald trump. amanda what was that about? >> we're in bizarre land. huckabee there on a stage beside a trump for president sign, it's superads arrogance trump. saddling up to donald trump very, i think, untrustworthy on evangelical issues. the best night of their campaign, talking to trump voters. i understand what they're doing. very deliberate. it's pretty crass, and it just kind of speaks to how crazy this process has become. >> so -- so, mike, you worked for the rnc. when reince priebus is watching last night, what really is going through his mind? >> well, look, i think what you're watching is the vision of reince priebus with these debates. lacht cycle, 23 debates. saying the same thing over and over again and we're on number seven. look, they've stayed pat. they've controlled the debates. set the rules. the candidates have adhered to them. worked with the networks. i think it's a smashing success for chairman priebus and the rnc the way they handled debates especially compared to the debacle in the democrat party where you have -- >> even last night? really? you don't think that was a debacle for the debate process? >> not at all. i think it was actually -- it was a ratification of the debate process. look, one of the candidates didn't show up. fine. they had the debate anyway. up to them. rand paul skipped one of the debates earlier. the debate went on anyway. it's well organized. cut down the number of debates. controlled who the moderators are in the dabts. i think the rnc did a fantastic job and benefited voters in the process to not have a traveling circus. one time last cycle, a debate on a saturday night and another on a sunday morning. just got to be aboabsurd. you're watching the vision of chairman priebus and a smashing success. >> new ground to applaud and look to brianna keilar's interview with donald trump. tried to make more ground on issues of abortion and other things that matter than fox ever tried. why fox shouldn't have waited until the last minute last night to ask those questions, because donald trump chose not to show up and that's why he won. he won by escaping the vetting he deserves. >> i have to leave it there. amanda carpenter and mike shields, thanks to you both. one night, two rival events and the number everyone wants to know -- how many watched? d donald trump predicted a fox debate without him onstage a total disaster, quote/unquote. brian brian selter has the answers. >> trying to break them down. 8.4 household rating. that means 8.4 of americans with tv sets tuned in. probably going to come out to 11 or 12, maybe 13 million viewers. that is really high. if we were the stars of a drama on primetime on nbc or cbs, we would love that big audience. by gop debate ratings actually pretty low. every other debate except one higher rated than last night's debate. trump will come out in the next few maintains saying he was able to hurt fox taking away viewership. here on cnn we aired parts of trump's speech. had about twice as many viewers last night then wednesday night. clearly some people wanted to see trump. but keep this in mind -- cnn and msnbc both showed parts of trump's speech and yet only a quarter of the audience as fox combined. so fox still came out ahead here in terms of raw totals, that matters, because ted cruz and marco rubio and jeb bush and all the candidates, they were able to get in front of a big audience, even though trump wasn't onstage which goes to show casual fans of trump, people that might not love politics but are interested in watching him decided not to watch him. decided not to watch fox. decided to skip the debate. but there was still a core audience, people that might be voting, going to the caucuses next week that did tune in for the debate. got to tell you, carol, these numbers will be spun all day long. >> i think perspective is important. compare them to the first debate on fox, huge numbers, but that was the first debate. the ceiling, too high. the numbers for the debates have been going down because frankly, a lot of them. so why would anyone expect these numbers to be ultra high anyway, even with trump? >> give you the argument why they should be higher. these numbers are probably a disappointment to fox although they won't admit that i don't think on the record. probably a disappoint, this was hyped like nothing before. doing a 24-hour pregame she how here on cnn. >> i get it. aren't people tired of the hype by this time, too? >> it's not that -- it's not -- i'm not focused on what ted cruz lacks. i just think that donald trump is the one we need right now in the white house to turn our economy around. look, i've said for a long time when asked, who do you like, who do you support? i haven't been concern pd who i supported and liked. i didn't want to lose the freshmen senators in the united states senate. we need them in there to support, gained so much ground and don't want to lose that ground. so with donald trump as president and those guys in the senate, that's a good deal. >> interesting. so, i want to run this by you, amy. 's in a press release early in his campaign donald trump said, "i have disavowed all super pacs requested the return of all donations made to said super pacs and calling on all presidential candidates to do the same." trump call esuper pac money, dirty money. why are you starting up a trump super pac? >> we just started this super pac. went up on the air this week. the fact if you look at all of the other candidates, they all have super pacs spending millions of dollars and we want to level the playing field. this is grassroots, donors coming together. donald trump hasn't told us to shut it down and eventually going into the general election, we don't want to give hillary clinton that advantage. we want it to be a level playing field and we are going to get behind him and support him. we're independent -- completely free and independent of the campaign anyway. so -- we're not operating with the campaign. we're doing this on our own. >> how would you respond to charges that donald trump says things that are racist, and he frightens many minority groups? ho would you defend donald trump? >> carol, listen, i don't know everything donald trump has said. what i do know is that he has the business sense we need in washington right now, and that people are lining up across the country. there is a movement going on across this country to support him. i don't agree with everything anybody says, any of those candidates say and i'm sure most would say the same thing but i think he's the leader we need now and millions are getting behind him. look at iowa. everybody said he should be at the debate. iowa voters wanted, him to be at the debate and how many thousands lined up at his event at drake university, i believe? >> so -- so -- will they eventually force those remaining people holed up in the wildlife refuge out? >> reporter: this morning very early about an hour ago i was able to get some information from inside of the refuge. the people who are still left there. as we understand it, there are still four people left inside of that refuge and they had been talking to the fbi overnight. we do not know what's happening at this moment, but certainly the fbi and local authorities are getting closer and closer to that headyou are kwas where there are still people holed up inside. >> sara sidner from oregon this morning. thank you. still to come in the newsroom, substance takes center stage at the donald trump debate. but did you miss the gop front-runner? >> i think they missed something. a presence there in the previous six debates and by the way, for the people who watched the debate, fewer of them, right? by half. the first fox debate got 25 million-ish, this probably half the viewers. the absence of trump, what it did, though, it turned focus away from him to the other candidates, and the other candidates had to figure out how they wanted to deal with that. one of the big questions going in was, would they take the stage and attack trump? attack him in absentia, for the most part, they didn't. for the most part they turned their attention to each other, which is why there are people like the des moines register that keep holding this up, saying it was a rough night for ted cruz. some of the candidate will to face questions and pressure they haven't had to face before. >> interesting. going back to the feud between fox and donald trump for just a minute, charmaine. fox said that it wrote that satirical press release to protect megyn kelly because she was being attacked. now, i have stood up for megyn kel around gotten a few choice e-mails myself from donald trump supporters, quite nasty. i sort of understand where fox was coming from. still -- it probably chose the wrong method to protect megyn kelly, right? the wrong way? right? >> i think it continues to underscore this misogynistic theme that runs through the trump campaign. to attack megyn, attack you. there seems to be a real trend line here, and you know, the problem for donald trump right now is, on the plus side, he did drive the debate and drive the narrative for the last 24 hours, but at the end of the day you don't change politics. it's still one man, one vote in america. and so we're into a phase now where we're going to move to where people have to show up at the caucus, and i it kel you, carol, talking to people and the ground here in des moines, an undercurrent donald trump is not working on that element of the campaign. i heard people yesterday derisively say, flies in on his airplane and flies back out again. very interesting. i think he has a challenge being, he's a reality star campaigner. he is approaching this as if it's a reality tv show, but at the end of the day, voting is not reality tv. reality -- it's showing up. it's actually caucusing. it's in person. it's not sitting back watching the television and throwing popcorn. >> i must say for trump's followers and post this to you, brian, they like the fact trump blew off fox news and held his own evoent. i'm read you something from sarah palin. teachered two buttons victory and defeat. thank you, mr. trump, for bringing victory to our vets and thanks to cnn for brings this uplifti patriotic broadcast int our living rooms. over $5 million raised for our veterans already. brian, trump supporters were all-in on trump's decision to hold this streparate event jrch trump supporters seem to be all-in on everything he does. right? i don't see as it, as a profound cultural shift. he's good at the art of the feud, if we're being generous, or the art of the temper tantrum if we're not. the ability to pick fights to get attention and we in the press are dutifully playing along because it rates well. an interesting story line. but i agree that last night's debate was an opportunity for some other candidates to maybe walk through the door that trump left open by skipping it. we don't know if that's the case or not. he admitted as much. we don't know who's going to show up to caucus monday. one thing iowans have been consistent about over the last several cycles, they like to prove people wrong, and they like to pick somebody other than the person who we thought was going to win, maybe trump skipping it helped get to that point and solidified support. this has been the hardest cycle to predict so far, and this is just another unprecedented element that we have going into it. >> all right. last question for you, john berman, because some people say that donald trump was very smart to do this because it exposed dead rhus. right? they called a few minutes ago. how look at all the cameras. like the academy awards. i don't feel good about turning down money, because my whole life i've been greedy. i've grabbed all the money i could get, but now i want to be greedy for the united states. i want to grab all that money. i'm going to be greedy for the united states. >> cnn senior white house correspondent jim acosta is live in new hampshire mr. trump's town hall is about to get underway, and john berman is in des moines. we'll check with john in a few minutes, but i want to start with jim in new hampshire. good morning. >> good morning, even in his answer sense last night at the gop debate, his presence was felt. nearly all the candidates on that stage talked about donald trump, and he's going to be out here in a few moments in new hampshire. it gives you a sense of the confidence inside the trump campaign right now, about 72 hours before the iowa caucuses. he's in new hampshire, not in iowa right now. as it was put at last night's debate, he was sort of the elephant not in the room. there were probably a lot of republicans out there using the flash back or previous channels button on their remote control switching back and forth between the debate and donald trump's event across town in des moines. while donald trump said this event was dedicated to raising money for veterans and he said that about $6 million was raised over all, there was really about teaching fox news a lesson. the campaign manager for donald trump told me that they feel like that press release from fox news, which really started a lot of this, was, quote, egregious, and donald trump talked about that with a colleague in which he said fox news finally apologized just before last night's debate. here's what he had to say. >> i just didn't think this was a fair process, and by the time they apologized, i said j look, the problem is now now have a big event scheduled. >> reporter: they apologized? >> yes. and they wouldn't have been nicer. >> who apologized? >> i don't want to say. >> reporter: he didn't want to say who apologized, but he maintains somebody did. i can tell you from talking to the donald trump campaign that he plans to participate in future gop debates. they said this was really with a one-time only thing and to bolster the fact that he was having a good night. the two previous iowa caucus winners, huckabee and santorum were at his event. the trump campaign insists they're moving forward and looking forward to the caucuses on monday night. they say they have their ground operation out in the field ready to into. they know that a lot of people have sort of written off that ground campaign in iowa, but according to the campaign manager, we have a plan, and he said they have not imported people from texas, sort of a jab at ted cruz there, that all of their forces are in iowa. they're feeling confident. who would have thought that skipping a debate might actually work on your behalf? that may be the lesson to take away from last night's debate. it may be working for donald trump. >> perhaps so. let's head back to des moines and check in with john berman. donald trump has moved onto new hampshire. are the rest of the candidates still in iowa? >> all of the other candidates are in iowa working the voters here. this is an interesting dynamic. i think the one risk for donald trump last night in skipping that debate was sending a message to iowa voters that he doesn't care as much about them. voters in the state call it the iowa debate. this morning the night after doing that, he's in new hampshire. that was the risk. the up side, of course, was the absence of flak going his way on that debate stage. a lot of those candidates got beat up last night on that stage. donald trump did not. by not being there, he avoided some tough questions and perhaps answers that would have put him in hot water. >> all right. john berman reports live from des moines. many thanks. my next guest says he was contacted by the trump campaign and will be receiving some of the funds that were raised last night. joining me now by phone, keith howard. he's the executive director of liberty house. he's also an army veteran. keith, good morning. >> good morning. thank you very much for having me. >> thanks for being with me. when did the trump people contact you? >> i was contacted by a colonel jolly yesterday afternoon around 4:30, and to be honest, i was afraid i was being punked. he said that he was representing the trump foundation, and would like to make a donation to liberty house, i called him back from a different number thinking this might be a college newspaper prank, but everything checked out, and then this morning i went online and saw that liberty house is one of the 22 organizations that the foundation has identified. >> do you know how much money you're going to get? >> i don't have a clue. i know that a figure of $6 million has been mentioned as what was raised, but i don't know how that money will be dispersed. we will be thankful for anything that we can get. >> you say your organization is very small. why do you think liberty house was chosen by the trump people? >> i wouldn't deem to suggest to understand the trump foundation's thinking, but i do know that liberty house has within the past month given up all federal funding because of housing and urban developments policy of requiring drug and alcohol abuse to be allowed in transitional facilities. we've been rpublic about that. i wrote an article a couple of weeks ago. i suspect that may have had something to do with it but i don't know. >> do you think the fact that you're located in new hampshire has anything to do with it? >> you mean because of that thing that's coming up? yeah, i suspect that the new hampshire primary didn't hurt our chances, but when i looked over the list, it seems to be a lot of other small grass roots organizations from a lot of different states, not just early primary states. >> so are most of the veterans organizations on that list small organizations? it's not the big ones who normally get national attention? >> i'm assuming from their titles and from the one or two sentence descriptions of them that they are like liberty house, small organizations who are here trying to meet needs instead of raise money or be an advocacy group. right now liberty house provides food for about 100 folks a week who come to us off the street. clothing for people who come to us needing winter clothes, and housing for ten formally homeless veterans. we are not a big player. we are meeting real human needs immediately. >> some people charged that trump was using wounded veterans as political props. what do you say? >> well, i say that i've been very careful to refer to the trump foundation, which is the organization that raised this money, the money that individual folks gave to help veterans, whatever portion of that comes to liberty house, will be used to meet immediate human needs of veterans who live here at liberty house and for anybody in the greater manchester area who needs food or clothing. so i can't speak to what nefarious thoughts may have been behind anybody else, but the trump foundation's money will be used to meet real human needs. >> keith howard, executive director of liberty house. thank you for joining me. >> thank you for having me. >> you're welcome. here with me national spokesperson for the donald trump campaign and a political consultant. welcome to both of you. good morning. >> good morning. >> katrina, i'll start with you. who do you think won the debate, and don't say mr. trump because he wasn't there. >> you know, i'm going to have to say that the people of iowa won the debate. we have seen for a very long time that republicans tend to believe that the media have the right to dictate who the nominee is going to be, and mr. trump stood up to that not only defending himself but defending the 40% of primary voters that support him and the 35% that support him in iowa. >> mindy, do you agree? >> i don't agree. i think that while donald trump has received a lot of publicity for this sham veterans event that he held instead of the debate, that the reason he was running from the dabt is because he didn't want to answer for his record. we saw there were video clips being played that showed past statement of some of the leading candidates, and that would be the worst thing for donald trump to have some of his past statements played via video, because he's flip-flopped. he's been an elitist, even on veterans. i'm glad that more support is going to our veterans now, but he was trying to chase them off fifth avenue because they were a sore sight that would take the shine off his trump tower. i'm not surprised he ran and didn't want to wans for his past statements. >> did he know in advance that the video clips were going to be played at the debate? >> not to my knowledge. but that would be questionable if the candidates know what's coming before it comes, right, carol? what i will say is the event last night to detract from that, i think is really sad, because we do have a lot of issues in this country with regards to veterans. this has been a topic for him since the beginning of his entrance in june. and i'll also say that many of these veterans that have come up to him on the trail have created a desire in mr. trump to do something for them. which is why he challenged cnn to do the exact same thing by donating some of the proceeds of the debate to veterans and to wounded warriors. when he had the opportunity to do it, it took him 24 hours and he pulled it off. i don't know if you got to see any of the event. it was amazing. coming from a military family myself, i won't see that event was a sham. there were a lot of people impacted. there were 22 charities receiving some of the funds. we're really happy for that. >> there are people who say it's political opportunity. a cnn analysis of the trump foundation's charitable foundations show only $77,000 out of $5 million in donations was given to veterans organizations. so, mindy, when you look at that, and then when you look at last night's event, and then what happened on fifth avenue, what does that say to you? >> well, i'm always happy for more support to go to our wounded and struggling veterans, but there's no way this isn't self-interested, another publicity stunt by donald trump that he thinks he's going to get away with. you outlined his record. this is the first time he's ever shown support for veterans. he was actively fighting them in new york, trying to chase them off the street because it was a nuisance to him and his wealthy friends. >> so does donald trump going forward, katrina, have a plan to help wounded veterans besides holding fundraisers? how will he help them in the long run? >> well, i think that's been the topic of one of mr. trump's points on veterans administration. it's not the first time that he's contributed. >> what's his plan? >> exactly what you pointed out a second ago. he's been talking about reforming veterans administration, putting the right people in place, getting people treatment, putting in transitional programs, getting proper medical care, letting them choose their own position. it has become more of a priority to him over the last few months because he's been interacting with them directly. and the reason why he didn't spend as much time talking about it last night is because there were veterans there who wanted to talk about the impact of the deci suicide rate among veterans in this country and the impact of all the sorrows their families have received that most politicians have been all talk and no action on. he's committed to supporting veterans as commander in chief. >> all of that is very important, but couldn't it have been said on the debate stage as well? >> well, absolutely. katrina outlined the plan. how is that different than other republican candidates with a similar plan? i think the issues with veterans affairs are well documented and most folks know how to combat it. it's donald trump running away from his record. and, again, i don't blame him for running away. if the voters of iowa who might think that he's a committed christian or that he's pro life or that he's so strong on immigration as he says now, if they see the videos and hear his record, they will know that's absolutely not the case, and this is the first time since he's started running that he's speaking about these issues in a way because it's pandering. it's appealing to iowa voters. i hope when they go to the caucuses next week that they see it for what it is and they don't support him. >> i have to leave it there. >> i'll just note this quickly -- >> thanks to both of you. while republicans made their case for why they should be the next occupant of the white house, the man who currently lived there slammed them for their rhetoric of hopefuls. >> we're not going to build progress with a budge of bluster and over the top claims that just play into isil's hands. we're not going to strengthen our leadership around the world by pitting groups of americans against each other. that's not keeping america safe. that's not who we have. >> president obama made the remarks at the annual house democratic debate. still to come in the news room, three california inmates on the loose. one of them compared to hannibal elector. now a jail employee is under arrest. they say when mr. clean saw all the different things his new smart phone does... ...it reminded him of his magic eraser. it's not just for marks on walls... it's tough on kitchen grease... and bathroom grime too. he's your... ...all around-tough-cleaner, mr. clean. ♪ (cell phone rings) where are you? >> chris christie is not running the show. it's easy for chris christie as he does in every one of the debates to pull this out of his hat and say, see? i'm the governor. you know, you can't trust those people in washington. i'm the governor, i'm the governor, i'm the governor. it gets kind of old. the fact of the matter is anybody who has been in public office for any period of time, and that includes all of them, you can take out of the hundreds of hours of air time and coverage from cnn, c-span, all spor spo sorts of other media, put snippets together and put them together and say you changed your position, and the fact of the matter is that ted had a very logical explanation. it does take a little bit time to explain what goes on in washington, but that's a sign he knows what's going on, and he was comfortable explaining his position. >> i don't know about that. i'll pose this question for you, cayly. the des moines register said cruz had a rough night. i mean, that exchange i talked about was just one example. at one point cruz threatened to walk off the stage. i don't know if he was joking or not. he said i'll walk off the stage if you ask me another mean question, but the audience didn't find it funny. >> nowhere did they find his attacks on trump funny. the des moines register saying cruz had a rough night. i would hardly look to the regist register about that. if you ask me, if the des moines register endorses you, that's probably a mar on a record as a conservative. cruz did a great job standing up for conservative values. usually it's he and trump as the lone conservative. trump had his own rally down the road and it was a success. >> there's been much talk about the divisive rhetoric coming out of the republicans. that's how some term it, device it rhetoric. i want you to listen what hillary clinton said and respond. >> i deeply regret the tone, the rhetoric that you're hearing from mr. trump and a number of the other candidates. the kinds of insulting remarks they're making about groups of people in our country, their strong opposition to the affordable care act, wanting to defund planned parenthood, coming back to trickle down economics. it's really a quite disturbing spectacle that we have going on. >> so, bob, in a general election, will rhetoric like that hurt republicans in the long run? >> we have a big day coming up. we have a number one, we have february 1st, i think we're going to do really well in iowa. we're leading in the iowa polls now and leading pretty good. and cruz is in second place. he got really pummelled last night. actually, i'm glad i wasn't there. he got pummelled. wow. and you know, they didn't even mention that he was born in canada. right? you know, when you're born in canada, you're not supposed to be running for president of the united states. prime minister of canada, flo no problem. he can run for canada. there he is. he can run prime minister of canada, no problem. so he got beaten up pretty badly last night. i don't know what's going to happen to his poll numbers, but probably they're not going up. i was told ours went up because of what he did last night. isn't that something? you know, it feltells you a lit bit about risk. risk is interesting. in theory, i would have rather done the debate. you're leading. you don't want to change the wheels, right? you want to just go, get it done, win and go to the next one, and i took a chance. i mean, i took a chance, and it's something you have to do. i took a chance and we did something. i don't know what the end result was. whatever the result is, i did the right thing. i did the right thing because i did something great for veterans, and when you think of it, these politicians are -- >> we're going to step away from this. bob, you support cruz, and i can only imagine steam coming out of your ears. >> no. we hear this all the time. i mean, the snide comments from mr. trump, the gobble-d-gook, if you can hear what he was saying. you can never figure it out. it makes no sense. you just shrug this off. one of the things about last night's debate that made it so enjoyable to watch is there was no donald trump there telling us how great he is over and over and over again. we were able to see more of the other candidates and have them respond to each other and to questions rather than donald trump. >> yet, donald trump has moved onto new hampshire. he's so confident about iowa. >> he's trying to spread his presence in new hampshire and iowa and across the united states. i have to disagree with you respectfully, congressman bar. donald trump is a voice for conservetism, a strong one. he's a fighter. he's come out swinging like no candidate in modern history with the exception of rond reagan. he's fought against the media and against the accomplishment and the washington cartel as has cruz, but he's an outsider. and this is an outsider's election. there's a lot of anger in this country and people want someone to find for them. he's doing that. i predict he'll be the nominee because he's an outsider with a strong, passionate voice for conservetism. >> i have to leave it there. thanks to both of you. still to come in the news room, the number of zika viruss is rising. symptoms worsen because your heart isn't pumping well. >> well, as you may know, donald trump has had a rather fractured relationship with the des moines register. it started back in june or july when we ran an editorial basically calling upon him to pull out of the race because of some of his sexist statements and anti-immigrant statements, and he didn't take kindly to that, not surprisingly. since then he has barred register reporters from getting in with media credentials. when they have covered his events, they've had to do it by coming in as part of the crowd rather than by media. because i'm with the opinion side of the newspaper and not the reporting side, i had not known that that would apply to me as well. i applied for press credentials and was turned away at the door when they learned where i was from. they didn't acknowledge it was because i was from the paper, but everybody else that was waiting in line got in for the press. i can only assume that was it. >> did you hang around outside? >> i hung around a little bit outside, but at that point, i decided it was better to watch the debate which was also going on at the same time, so i ran home and sort of switched back and forth between the two. >> your paper's headline this morning said cruz had a bad night. what do you think? >> i think that's true. i think, actually, ted cruz showed himself to be a little testy around criticism, and i think the low point for him was when he said if you're just going to sit here and criticize me, i'm going to walk off the stage. i don't think that showed people a lot of character or strength on his part, and i think, yes, you have to expect that if you're the front runner, especially in the absence of donald trump, you've got to be able to take some punches and stand up for yourself, and he was just too susceptible to criticism. i think, oddly enough, the person who wasn't there was the one who won. i think donald trump won that one. >> it's interesting to me that donald trump has left iowa. he's already in new hampshire. it seems like he's very confident he's going to win the iowa caucuses. do you think he will? >> i think he will. i think he has amazing traction here, and it's incredible. as he says, everything he does that is in some way controversial, inflammatory, just sends his poll numbers vaulting up. why? because i think he has been very successful at positioning himself as the anti-establishment, the alternative candidate. not part of the washington establishment, and ironically, not even part of the media establishment when it comes to fox news, which, obviously, has been very supportive of conservatives, and so i think that's a narrative he managed to milk last night, that he's not going to be pushed around. he is not going to be told or criticized. if he doesn't want megyn kelly to interview him, then they should be more respectful of him so he's going to go away and have his own part. i think people really interpret that as a sign of strength. some would say bluster and some say entitlement, and other things, but for him and for his masses, it's he's calling the shots. and in the same way that he might say we're not going to let isis push us around or other countries push us around, people interpret that as this is a man who will stand up for us and our country. i think, actually, more than wanting him to be elected president, so much, they want to be donald trump. i mean, look at him. he's wealthy. he's got these beautiful wives and he has this reality tv show. he has kind of everything that people who are struggling and stuck down there don't have and want to have. they think follow his path and that's how you get to be successful, and that's how america gets to be successful. maybe a little bit irony there. i think what he was showing was a bit of insecurity. he didn't want to be challenged with tough questions, and yet, by walking away and doing his own thing, he managed to spin that into a kind of sign of strength, which is ironic, but i think people bought it. >> i think so at this point. thank you so much for being with me. still to come in the news room, bristol palin watched tina fey mock her mother an saturday night live and she was not amused. what's that, broheim?
