Snake wranglers now on duty

City's trail removal has some Peterson Creek Park users in shock

Kamloops' tree canopy is growing

Trees were planted last year in cemeteries, on McArthur Island and in the Dufferin Wetlands. Species included oak, aspen, Japanese lilac and pine. City of Kamloops parks manager Jeff Putnam said the COVID-19 pandemic was the reason the city fell short of its goal. The city has previously said parks usage was up significantly during the pandemic, leading to more wear and tear on the land and requiring more staff time for upkeep as a result. A report noted funding for capital projects was placed on hold, grant availability was lacking and tree-planting events were cancelled. Putnam said a posting for a new arborist, approved earlier by council during budget talks, is closing. One task by the new staffer will include working with the city’s development department to ensure accountability on behalf of developments with respect to landscaping requirements.
