Nipah, cases of which surfaced in Kozhikode district last week for the third time in the last five years, has infected six persons, and two of them died. Four patients are undergoing treatment.
Kerala’s Kozhikode district reported six cases of the zoonotic disease this week. Two people who had tested positive have died and the others are undergoing treatment.
Dr A S Anoop Kumar, an expert on infectious diseases and tropical fevers at Aster MIMS Hospital, Kozhikode, was instrumental in detecting the Nipah virus both in 2018, when Kerala saw its first outbreak, and now, as it handles a new set of infections. Excerpts from an interview:
