Letters: Face-to-face GP appointments are vital – but they must be used wisely

Credit: anthony devlin/pa SIR – I welcome the move towards more face-to-face GP appointments. However, there need to be fewer pointless ones for things like broken nails. If only those who genuinely needed appointments were seen, the service might be considerably less stretched. I think initial phone consultations can be a good thing, along with the use of 111 to triage A&E. Barbara Marshall   SIR – It is good to know that patients have the right to book face-to-face consultations with their GPs. Now all we have to do is get through to them on the phone or persuade them to respond to emails.

Letters: By rejecting identity politics, Hartlepool exposes the cracks in Labour

8 May 2021 • 12:01am Boris Johnson with an inflatable version of himself in Hartlepool, a constituency now held by the Conservatives for the first time since it was formed in 1974 Credit: LEE SMITH /Reuters SIR – The Hartlepool by-election result confirms that voters want a party that respects the Brexit vote. They also want a party they believe can level up the country, rejecting the “us and them” of the identity politics of the Labour Left. No amount of Boris Johnson’s furnishings can paper over the cracks of this present Labour Party. Jeremy Thompson   SIR – The result is a crushing defeat for the BBC news team, which had spent two weeks trying to make Wallpapergate the No 1 election issue.
