Text messages purporting to be from a Russian soldier to his mother, read publicly this week by Ukraine’s U.N. ambassador, underscore the contest underway to shape the war’s narrative.

Many thousands of Ukrainians, fearful of the war, are leaving their homes on a slow journey west, enduring difficulties but also buoyed by the generosity of their countrymen.

Republicans and Democrats on Capitol Hill are pursuing the ban to punish Russia for its invasion of Ukraine, but the White House is opposed, warning of energy price spikes.

At least 660,000 people, mostly women and children, fled Ukraine in the five days after Russia invaded — the most intense wave of European migration since at least the 1990s.

Under the measure, which would apply to all Ukrainian nationals, refugees would be granted the right to live, study and work across the 27-member bloc for up to three years.

“The updated guidance is in response to changes in the nature of the pandemic and the increasing availability of new tools to prevent transmission and mitigate illness,” the agency said.

Republicans forced the vote even though the measure has no chance of enactment, as part of an election-year effort to use pandemic precautions as a political weapon against Democrats.

There was no sign of possible de-escalation on the sixth day of the invasion, as Russia appeared determined to toughen its tactics against a defiant neighbor.
