A preliminary investigation by the SA Civil Aviation Authority has confirmed the helicopter which crashed en route to KwaZulu-Natal last month killing Netcare 911 medics and its pilot broke apart in midair and the impact was “not survivable”.
The Bell 430 helicopter took off from Ultimate Heli heliport in Midrand, Gauteng, heading to Hillcrest Hospital in Pietermaritzburg on January 21. On board were a helicopter paramedic, two doctors and a theatre nurse and 12 bottles of oxygen.

South Africa reported 14 air crashes in January 2021 alone, the highest number since Black October 2008.
EIGHT PEOPLE DIED IN FOURTEEN AIR CRASHES
The Director of the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA), Poppy Khoza, says four of these January aircraft accidents were fatal with eight people losing their lives.
According to SACAA, this is the highest number of accidents since what has become known as Black October 2008 in which 20 accidents occurred, killing 26 people.
MORE AIR CRASHES DESPITE LOCKDOWN
Preliminary investigations into the accidents reveal the causes include human error by flight crew, followed âby aircraft operations and then mechanical or engine failureâ. Khoza says the causes of the crashes are nothing new, so she asks why are they reoccurring. âCould it be a matter of attitude and not necessarily aptitude?â

This is how one stunned medic summed up the mood as scores of EMS personnel gathered on the hospital’s helipad to pay their respects to the five killed in the crash.
As they placed flowers and lit candles, the red emergency lights of scores of emergency vehicles were switched on and three choppers conducted a flyover. They stood in groups, hugging and comforting each other. On Friday, a motorcade of emergency vehicles drove from Krugersdorp to Milpark where they were greeted by grief-stricken colleagues.

A transplant team regarded by colleagues as the best in SA had prayed for years they would not be involved in a helicopter crash.
"We always said, 'God, please don't let that happen to us, because we can't afford it in terms of manpower,'" said Dr Paul Williams, a critical-care specialist who worked with the team at Netcare Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg...
