Shia Muslims around the world take out Ashura processions to commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, a grandson of the Prophet, who was killed in the Battle of Karbala (680 AD; 10 Muharram 61 AH) in present day Iraq.
J&K administration allowed the Muharram procession in Srinagar after nearly 30 years, marking a significant development. The procession, which commemorates the Islamic year s start, has sparked demands to lift the ban on the traditional Ashura march on Muharram 10th. The Dogras historically restricted Muharram processions and banned them altogether during the onset of militancy in the region.
