Police skip a step with fresh charge against arson accused

Premium Content Subscriber only Police have incorrectly filed a second charge against a man accused of setting a Byron hinterland home alight, a court has heard. Isaac Lehane, 25, from Mullumbimby, is facing a charge of intentionally or recklessly destroying a home by fire with intent to cause bodily injury. The charge relates to a blaze which destroyed a home on Tyagarah Rd in Myocum in the early hours of Tuesday, September 17, 2019. Police will allege a pet dog died in the blaze. Mr Lehane was arrested over the alleged incident on November 4 last year. When he faced Byron Bay Local Court for the second time on Monday, Magistrate Karen Stafford queried whether a second charge now before her had been served upon the defence.

Lawyer asks court to throw out delayed gel blaster case

Premium Content Subscriber only The lawyer representing a woman facing firearms charges has asked the court to throw the case out. Tayla Ashley Blundell, 25, from Tweed Heads, has not lodged any formal pleas to the 20 charges against her. The charges arose from May 13 and June 12 last year and involve numerous counts of unauthorised firearm possession and four drug possession charges. According to court documents, all of the items she is alleged to have possessed are gel blaster style guns, legal in Queensland but classed as a prohibited weapon in NSW. Defence lawyer Kim Ivosevac said the court had the power to discharge Ms Blundell due to a delay, after the DPP asked for more time to file documents to progress the case in Tweed Heads Local Court on Friday.
