Expanding populations are headed north to new sites in Humboldt County, even British Columbia.

Flooding along the coast and in low lying areas came to Humboldt County with a storm. Around Humboldt Bay, the storm had so far brought 1.5-2 inches Wednesday, according the National Weather Service Eureka, with the Kings Range seeing a higher amount of precipitation.

After briefly exiting Thursday, rain is expected to reappear Friday and linger past the weekend, the National Weather Service reported.

In the Humboldt Bay region, the driest part of the county, 2 to 3 inches of rain are expected to fall mostly on Saturday, while upper elevations are projected to get 4 to 6 inches and the King Range could see as much as 8 inches of rain, said James White, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service office in Eureka.

While the number of visits, 136,586 this year so far has since declined from their peak in – 142,004 visits in 2021 and 116,287 in 2020 – the spike in visitors precipitated an overhaul in the way the Bureau of Land Management issues visiting permits. As of October, prospective hikers, walkers, campers and nature lovers reserve their spots with a rolling window system allowing permits as far as three months in advance.
