The schools board of governors voted to close Cincinnatis residential rabbinical program and focus on its coastal campuses.

The change received more than a two-thirds vote from the HUC Board of Governors. It ends the nearly 150-year-old rabbinical program at the campus where American Reform Judaism was founded.

The school will no longer ordain rabbis on its historic Midwest campus, following weeks of fiery debate.

(RNS) — Hebrew Union College’s Ohio campus had seen declining enrollment as students opted for its coastal campuses, in New York and Los Angeles.

The decision comes after years of declining revenue and enrollment at the school — and months of bitter debate across the Reform community.

Hebrew Union College will officially stop ordaining rabbis in Cincinnati, the Ohio city where the Reform seminary was founded in 1875.
