JOHANNESBURG - Metro police officers are in Soweto on Monday morning where taxi drivers are staging a protest.
It’s not yet clear what sparked the demonstration.
Taxis are barricading the road on Klipspruit Valley near the N17 Soweto highway.
“Taxi drivers are protesting at the moment along Klipspruit Valley Road by Khumalo Street in Orlando West Soweto. Motorists are advised to use Chris Hani Road or to drive through Meadowlands as an alternative route as officers are assisting with the diverting of traffic,” said JMPD s Wayne Minaar.

JOHANNESBURG – Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) officers are on the scene in Klipspruit Valley, Soweto, on Tuesday following overnight protests in which two vehicles were set alight and another was damaged.
The JMPD said one of the drivers was forcefully removed by the protesters.
The department s Xolani Fihla said the situation was now calm: “Officers are monitoring and are on high alert. Motorists are advised to exercise caution for debris on the road.”
