attendance at large indoor gathering, wear a mask in outdoor crowded areas and asking people to wear a mask and get a covid-19 test if you are going to be gathering. of course, precautions are especially important for people who are especially vulnerable, infants, immunocompromised, people over 65 and of course they say use a high-quality mask not just a kn -- use a kn95 or kf94 or n95 not just a simple cloth mask, wear an effective mask. this is something that we're seeing not just in new york, as you mentioned, those several other cities. los angeles, oregon is one of the places, this is a state where hospital beds are more than 85% full. this is an area where officials are recommending masking. los angeles county is also just recommending it and so is the seattle metro area, health officials there in three of that state's washington state's most populous counties are recommending masking. the thing is no one wants to go back to the battle days of covid
me a little bit. if you're traveling in the next few days, next week or so, if you're healthy, no pre-existing conditions, would you recommend those folks wear a mask? and what about folks who may be compromised or traveling with kids who aren't able to get vaccinated? what do you recommend those folks do? >> no question if you're immunocompromised or if you have a household member or family member that's immunocompromised, kids under 5 or even elderly, my parents are over the age of 60, i recommend everyone in that group, first of all, get a booster if you're eligible and then wear a high-quality mask. n95s can be hard. i wear one for 12 hours. but a kn95 of high quality. or two surgical masks. but for healthy people who have been able to get vaccinated and boosted, maybe twice even, i would still recommend wearing a mask. here's why. number one, there are a lot of other respiratory illnesses we're watching. influenza, para-influenza. this is the worst time to get sick from work productivity when everybody is back at work. plus you really don't know who
traveling, when they are going through airports or taking a long train ride? >> well, you know, i think the plane environment itself because of the air exchange is a safer environment. i think it's the terminals sometimes. people clustering together in large indoor spaces like that regardless of vaccination status, regardless of testing. that becomes a little bit more dicey, especially if you work with vulnerable people. i work in a hospital. if you have people who are under the age to be vaccinated in your household. you can still wear a mask. the recommendation from the cdc is still clear, you should still wear a mask. and you and i talked about this, but if you're going to wear a mask, wear the best filtration mask you can, kn95 or n95 mask. in my case i'll still do that. i'm going to do all i can to prevent from transmitting the virus. again, we'll see if the numbers continue to come down, if there's a challenge to this

walensky double masked at the hearing and then anthony fauci not wearing a mask. washington post says common inability to decipher conflicting advice and clashing guidelines. if you have something as simple of, put the plit screen back up, rochelle walensky on one side double masked with n95 masks there and anthony fauci with no mask, when are we supposed to think? >> how about the person that is masked that takes it off and spits in the mic. masks were studied in populations for previous variants. i do not think they worked very well right now. i think anything less than a kn95 is doing very little and i'm not going to tell children to put an n95 mask on john, i wear them in the office and they are impossible to keep on and
suggest that everyone use n95 or kn95 masks. and just a few days ago they said cloth masks were still fine. so what is going on? this one is a kn95. i think the n95 i have is the one that's tougher to breathe in. what is going on here? >> if you can wear a kn95 or n95, if you can get it, it is absolutely the best protection. there is no question about it. nobody disputes that. the cdc doesn't dispute that. and they hopefully will update their guidance. and say so. every test that's been done shows these are what to wear. cloth masks are not enough in the case of omicron so don't bother wearing them. surgical masks will sometimes do but not as good as n95s. we need to make the clear and the cdc will reinforce the fact
