Illegal downloads remain VERY popular as billions take serious risks

Piracy tracking firm MUSO has published new data showing that 130 billion visits were logged with pirate websites worldwide last year. As you might expect, the United States is the number one source of this eye-watering web traffic, accounting for 12.5 billion visits alone, followed by Russia (8.3 billion), China (6.9bn) and India (5.6bn). These are some of the most populous countries on the planet, so that makes sense. However, when looking at the data for those countries with the most visits per user, Barbados is on top followed by Andorra, Georgia, and Ukraine. Interestingly, the data shows that traditional methods of piracy, like downloading via torrents, is nowhere near the most popular method of obtaining content. As the likes of Netflix and Prime Video have popularised streaming over renting or buying physical media, illegal streaming has also become much more popular, rather than downloading individual files.

Kodi and IPTV users warned: police could be monitoring everything you stream

This latest campaign comes from Lancashire Constabulary s Cyber Crime Unit and follows similar letters sent out by Norfolk and Suffolk police. In total, some 7,000 people are already thought to be on the list to receive notices from police. These warning letters alert households to the possibility of up to five years behind bars if anything untoward is found when their streaming activity is monitored. Watching illegal content online has become big business with some criminals offering fully-loaded Kodi boxes at a much cheaper price than subscribing to services such as Sky, Netflix or Virgin Media. These notices are a direct and alarming wake up call for people using illegal streams, warned Kieron Sharp, CEO of the Federation Against Copyright Theft (FACT). If you use illegal streaming services you are accountable for your actions and you will be pursued. This is not a grey area and it is not worth the risk.
