On Thursday, the actor and Maine native stopped by Central Maine Medical Center to sit and talk with recovering patients and their families.

Eighteen people were killed and 13 more were injured in shootings at a Lewiston, Maine, bar and a bowling alley on Oct. 25, setting off a multiday search for the gunman, whose body was found two days later.

As the hospital braced for what would prove to be its worst disaster ever, the staff knew what they had to do, but knew little of what they might face.

Despite our aggressive efforts to hire more nurses — including offering free education and recruiting nurses from across the globe — Maine, like the rest of the nation, does not have enough nurses to meet our needs.

LEWISTON — Central Maine Medical Center’s stroke team has earned recertification by The Joint Commission, a nonprofit organization that accredits U.S. health care organizations and programs. “It can be really difficult to get through nursing school. It's challenging and you don't have a lot of time to work and have that extra money to pay for the tuition.”

Graduates will be able to receive roughly $22,000 in tuition reimbursement, which is intended to cover any remaining school costs not covered by student loans.

All 20 clinicians came to Maine by way of Eglin Air Force Base in Florida, where they are members of the 96th Medical Group.
