Nomusa Mtshali celebrates queerness in new artwork showcasing in New York

Nomusa Mtshali celebrates queerness in new artwork showcasing in New York By Entertainment Reporter Share South African contemporary artist Nomusa ’Musah’ Mtshali has recently released a selection of new photographic works titled “Titanium eZulwini.” Mtshali’s new body of work is on exhibition at Proto Gomez Gallery in New York City. “Titanium eZulwini” is a celebration of gender expression. Titanium is a persona and a utopia space, where Mtshali makes sense of their own world. The Durban-born artist’s work explores gender fluidity and queer identity within the context of South African society via the pseudo-persona of Titanium, who lives their life on an imaginary escape planet where gender is non-binary.

Keeping art alive in the city

Keeping art alive in the city By Tanya Waterworth Share Durban - The Covid lockdown has had a devastating financial impact on galleries and museums in the city, and they are now trying to re-ignite the sector. After a widely-shared appeal for funding on Facebook by KwaZulu-Natal Society of Arts (KZNSA) Gallery, director Angela Shaw this week said they had a good response. She said by using a three-pronged approach ‒ on their social media platforms, in their newsletters and in personal letters to members ‒ they had brought in small donations which have so far raised R30 000. They also engaged with companies to donate funding from which a business can benefit in tax, held art sales online and in the gallery, and supported the gallery s well known café in Glenwood.
