PLL Draft Recap: Possibly the Deepest Draft in Pro Lacrosse History
Tue Apr 27 2021 | Nelson Rice | Pro
If for some reason you needed more proof of the absurd level of talent on the field every weekend this spring, look no further than last night’s Premier Lacrosse League College Draft.
The advent of the NCAA’s blanket eligibility waiver last spring in light of the COVID-19 pandemic created one of the most exciting college lacrosse seasons in recent memory. It also made this year’s draft class one of the deepest in pro lacrosse history maybe even the deepest.
In a sign of the times, all 32 players selected were either fifth-year seniors or graduate students.

In a week riddled with predictable results, the top 10 remains stable, but the rest of the ranks have seen some sizable shifts. While Tufts has continued to establish its dominance, it hasn’t been quite enough to unseat RIT.
Had the Tigers not been able to beat their recent opponents and been forced to take a lengthy break, that narrative might be different, but in this reality, RIT is still the king in the north. Salisbury remains in the middle seat, representing the Mid-Atlantic well after taking care of business yet again this week by defeating Christopher Newport 17-5.

St. John Fisher climbs from No. 16 to No. 13 this week.
There’s a lot of movement in the latter half of the Nike / US Lacrosse Division III Men’s Top 20, but the top six teams remain fairly unchanged. Although, there is one notable swap, and that’s due to the fact that the NESCAC is back. Mostly.
Tufts proved that its offense is still the most elite fighting force in D-III by dropping a school-record 29 goals against Colby in its opening game of 2021. As you might recall, the Jumbos were 4-0 and averaging 25 goals a game against regionally rigid competition before the 2020 season was canceled.

The Stormy Petrel is a mascot made infamous by how recognizably bizarre it is, but the school it represents is home to a burgeoning men’s lacrosse program in Brookhaven, Georgia.
The Oglethorpe University men’s lacrosse team won their first game under new head coach Kyle Morris last Friday by beating Brevard College 10-3. It was also Morris’ first-ever win as a college head coach.
A former midfielder at Division II Shorter University, Morris came to the sport much later than most collegiate players and had a bizarre positional switch as well.
