Weymouth Post 79 hopeful despite playoff loss

A change in the American Legion Zone 6 baseball schedule is helping Weymouth Post 79 learn about its strengths and weaknesses.
The league had to produce a team to represent the Zone for the State Tournament held in Quincy in August.
League officials held a playoff during the week of July 11-17 to pick that team. An additional playoff game will be played at the end of the regular season to get another team in the post-season tournament.
Post 79 had a tough time in its play-in game against Milton at home (July 11). Weymouth held a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning, but wild pitching hurt them that helped contribute to an 8-1 loss.

A year ago, the American Legion Baseball season was canceled due to the pandemic. As a result, the Mass Independent Baseball League was created by Legion and Junior Legion teams to provide players from both divisions a chance to play a shorter season.
The easing of the pandemic allowed American Legion to resume play this year, but the games began a couple of weeks later because the high school baseball season ended in the latter part of June.
“It is still a six-week season,” said Weymouth American Legion Post 79 coach Mike Connelly who begins his 14th season said. “It is very different. We play everyone in the Zone once and start the playoffs. We then come back and play everyone again and then do another playoff. It will be two sets of playoffs this year because we need a District 6 (for the state tournament) by July 24.”
