A popular family area at the Gladstone region’s Awoonga Dam faces an extended closure while essential maintenance is undertaken.
Lake Awoonga’s Riverston Bay Recreational Area will be closed to the public over the next two weeks.
GAWB Chief Executive Officer Darren Barlow said a new section of footpath would be constructed between the Lake Awoonga Caravan Park and Riverston Bay Recreation Area.
“Nothing is more important to us than the health and wellbeing of our visitors,” Mr Barlow said.
“We’re committed to providing safe and accessible recreational facilities to our local community.”
GAWB will improve pedestrian access between the Caravan Park and Riverston Bay by replacing part of the wall at the Riverston Bay entrance with a new footpath.

“They should not be left in a degraded state.”
Some of the other examples were: Kangaroo Point Cliffs in Brisbane, Anstey Hill Recreation Park in the Dandenong Ranges, Te Puna Quarry Park, Whangarei Gardens, Butchart Gardens, Lake Awoonga, Benaraby, Qld, Sir Joseph Banks Conservation Park in the Town of 1770, and Lake Moondara at Mount Isa.
Many of the sites were disused quarries, and some experienced issues of degradation and illegal dumping.
The sites now offer picnic areas, playgrounds and botanical gardens, and are managed in a variety of ways – by the local council, community groups, or are privately owned.

Tinder dry grass and bushland across the Gladstone region continues to burn this morning with six fires currently being patrolled.
Fortunately no lives have been lost and there has been minimal damage to homes and structures, except a house at Calliope which was destroyed by fire on Boxing Day.
A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokesman said a fire that broke out yesterday and jumped Gladstone Benaraby Road at Glen Eden was patrolled this morning.
“Early this morning fire fighters extinguished some hot spots in logs and vegetation at Glen Eden,” the spokesman said.
“There was no report of any significant fire at all there.”
