The Housing Authority explains the rent calculation process through three examples and why it can appear that tenants are being paid to live in public housing:
Laura is 32 with 3 children. She is unemployed and has no income. Her rent at Fairview would be $50, with utilities included.
Laura is 32 with 3 children. She is unemployed and has no income. Her rent at Lakeland Terrace would be negative $23 which includes the minimum rent of $50 and a $73 utility allowance. Laura would pay for gas and electric.
Laura is 32 with 3 children and started receiving $150-per-week child support payments. Her rent at Fairview would be $159 (The rent would be 30 percent of the total after subtracting the support payments from the total rent).
