Activists are voicing the alarm. After its inquiry, the Gambia Truth Commission recommended that some 90 officials, largely in the security sector, be banned from public office or prosecuted. The government has committed itself to fully implement the recommendations of the Commission but to date, on that sensitive issue, its actions fall short of promises.
Falana added that the recommendation by the Gambia’s Truth Reconciliation and Reparations Commission for the prosecution of Jammeh and his co-perpetrators for 44 cases of murder, torture, and rape is a turning point for justice in the country.

The Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission in Gambia has under-investigated and missed acknowledging sexual violence under Yahya Jammeh’s dictatorship, Marion Volkmann-Brandau, human rights lawyer, and Toufah Jallow, Gambian women rights activist and rape survivor, showed in a recently released documentary. While exposing a long series of shortcomings at the TRRC, they call for a change before the Commission ends its work this year.
