Passage of Democrats Inflation Reduction Act capped off years of campaigning for major climate change legislation and breathed new life into the renewable energy sector — but not without simultaneously handing a major victory to oil and gas interests by ensuring they have a chance to bid on more federal acreage.

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management has "no discretion" on whether to carry out previously canceled offshore oil and gas lease sales because of changes in law enacted through Democrats Inflation Reduction Act, the agency said Thursday, a setback for environmental groups demanding an end to new leasing.

Democrats and advocates alike fear criticizing the senator in the hope of reaching a deal.

"Coal is killing our climate, yet the Biden administration is defending it," one environmental advocate said.

In a court filing on Thursday, the Biden administration chose to maintain a Trump-era decision that abandoned the Obama administration’s coal leasing moratorium on public lands. The administration has argued that it is reviewing the program but has refused to reinstate a moratorium to prevent new leasing before an adequate environmental review is completed. At the same time, the administration continues to process applications for new coal leases as U.S.

However, the report largely ignores climate change issues and does not recommend stopping leasing federal lands to gas and oil drillers, something President Biden campaigned on.
