The Laurel School Board voted 4-2 Thursday to revise its policy after the teachers and classified staff unions threatened legal action if masks weren t once again made mandatory, Superintendent Linda Filpula wrote in a letter to parents Friday. The issue arose Feb. 12 when Gov. Greg Gianforte rescinded Montana s statewide mask mandate, which left individual districts to determine their own masking policies in schools. With no statewide requirement in place, Laurel schools reverted to the language within their own reopening plan, which stated that students and staff may wear masks in buildings and on buses- although they weren t required, according to an email from Filpula to parents earlier this month.

Masks optional in Laurel schools

Masks optional in Laurel schools and last updated 2021-02-18 14:24:38-05 Teachers and parents are speaking out on both sides of the debate over facemasks in Laurel Schools. Some expressed concern that the board made a change from mandatory masks for COVID-19. But the board says masks have always been optional. The union argued that the board previously agreed to masks under state guidelines, but the chair and the superintendent say those guidelines changed with Gov. Greg Gianforte, R-Mont. The reason that we re here tonight, the crux of the issue is really that between the (Memorandum Of Agreement), our board policy and our reopening plan, said Linda Filpula. We have some inconsistent language in there.
