More than half of U.S. beaches, including 14% of those in New Jersey, experienced at least one day when fecal contamination levels reached potentially unsafe levels in 2022, according to a report from Environment America, a Boston-based research and advocacy group. Swimming in contaminated water can lead to gastrointestinal illnesses, eye and ear infections and respiratory diseases.
