"If you look for truth, you may find comfort in the end; if you look for comfort you will not get either comfort or truth only soft soap and wishful thinking to begin, and in the end, despair." -C. S. Lewis And yet, when you search for the truth, you often find answers that butt up against your sensibilities, your preconceptions, and even your very notions of common sense. Such is the case in this week's Ask Ethan, where longtime reader and commenter MandoZink asks:

High-altitude regions will get more extreme rain than previously thought, making floods and landslides more likely, a study finds.

Utility industry news and analysis for energy professionals.

Automakers and electric utilities need to work together more closely than ever as new vehicles hit the road. But crucial links are lagging.

Scientists have analyzed single atoms using X-rays for the first time at Argonne’s Advanced Photon Source. This new capability will find wide application in environmental and medical research, as well as in batteries, microelectronic devices and beyond.

Argonne National Lab researchers have developed a fluorine-containing electrolyte for lithium-ion batteries that optimizes performance in sub-zero temperatures, a development that could improve the charging efficiency of electric vehicles in cold climates.

Connecting wind and solar farms to tomorrow’s electricity-hungry customers will require huge investment

A team led by Argonne has developed a new catalyst composed of elements abundant in the Earth. It could make possible the low-cost and energy-efficient production of hydrogen for use in transportation and industrial applications.

Many owners of electric vehicles worry about how effective their battery will be in very cold weather. Now a new battery chemistry may have solved that problem. In current lithium-ion batteries, ...

Researchers have developed a fluorine-containing electrolyte for lithium-ion batteries that performs well even at sub-zero temperatures.
