It's never nice to share news like this with you, but the family of legendary actor Sir Michael Gambon have confirmed today that the Harry Potter star has died in hospital after dealing with pneumonia.

Starting out on the stage, Gambon brought gravitas and wit to his prolific work in film and TV, but remained a private, self-deprecating talent.

Sir Michael died peacefully in hospital following a bout of pneumoni a, with JK Rowling and Daniel Radcliffe yesterday leading tributes to titan of British cinema and theatre.

Britain has lost one of its greatest actors in the Irish-born star who found fame in Dennis Potter’s groundbreaking TV drama The Singing Detective.

Michael Gambon, the beloved character actor who starred as Dumbledore in the Harry Potter series, has died.

A statement by his family, issued by his publicist, said he died following “a bout of pneumonia.”

A statement on behalf of his wife Lady Gambon and son Fergus, issued by publicist Claire Dobbs said, “We are devastated to announce the loss of Sir Michael Gambon.”

The deep-voiced actor had a career spanning 50 years but gained fame among young people for his portrayal of Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore.
