Ray Bonneville – Gust Of Wind (Stony Plain): “Ray Bonneville combines electric blues motifs, a light sense of humor, and a pop approach to song-making. On pieces like the opening “Don’t Look Back,” with electric piano from Richard Bell, this combination comes across as a sort of Memphis Randy Newman. Colin Linden here produces this unique, memorable Canadian songwriter on his third album. Linden provides slide, baritone, and other guitar work on the album. Like Linden, Bonneville is adept at incorporating blues styles into accessible pop gems. Recorded in Canada and Nashville, this album features mandolin maestro Tim O’Brien on “Canary Yellow Car” and the Band’s Rick Bell playing keyboards on five selections. Like the album, Bonneville is a constantly moving dual citizen of Canada and the United States. This broad base of experience reflects in an album featuring North American themes of pop, rock, and blues.” (https://www.allmusic.com/album/gust-of-wind-mw00002

Ghalia Volt, One Woman Band (Ruf Records) - OffBeat Magazine

OffBeat Magazine One Woman Band, is boldly minimalist and musically intriguing. Following recording sessions in New Orleans for Let the Demons Out and North Mississippi’s hill country for her Mississippi Blend, Volt recorded One Woman Band at the historic Royal Studios in Memphis. True to the album’s title, she simultaneously sings and plays slide guitar, drums and tambourine. Although bassist Dean Zucchero and guitarist “Monster” make a few contributions to the album, One Woman Band usually is a one-woman show, co-produced by Volt and Lawrence “Boo” Mitchell (Buddy Guy, Al, Green, Solomon Burke, Anthony Hamilton).  The album opens with “Last Minute Packer,” a blues-rock song that pairs Volt’s pleasingly husky voice and impressive range with loud, distorted electric guitar and pounding, no-frills drums. A reverb fan, Volt drenches her slide guitar and Southern-country-sounding singing in the echo effect for “Espìritu Papàgo.” The latter song’s ps

New Austin Music Worth Your Bandwidth This Week

One deep sleeper of 2020: November s Brand New by Honey Made. Chances are the eight-foot scrim in the front window of Waterloo Records didn t register thanks to the graham cracker album art – and maybe just maybe a global pandemic. Inside the CD, producer (Steve Berlin of Los Lobos), engineer (Jim Vollentine), and studio (Texas Treefort) all make the credits roll, yet zero mention appears of the actual group turning soul-infused retro nectar into viscous ear candy. Online, however, behold a nonet straight outta the Stax/Volt annals: three pieces of brass punctuating a trio of Black vocalists – Donald Ford Jr. and brothers Chris (also drums) and Willie Barns II – overlaid atop a triptych of Caucasian rhythm pushers (keys, bass, percussion). Party band proclaims the locals website, and indeed, several of the 10 tracks do a Dirty Sixth Street shuffle. Slick Eighties dance-and-drink-more Steppin Out and the naked drink-after-every-line funk thrust of Canadian Mist leave
