At the recent Boardwalk Chili Cook-off, Pleasure Pizza-East Side Eatery won first place with its “Death Wish Chili” for People’s Choice Professional. The Boardwalk’s Cocoanut Grove team won Best Professional Con Carne; Jack O’Neill Restaurant & Lounge received second place for the second consecutive year. Far West Fungi won Best Professional Vegetarian Red.

Santa Cruz Restaurant Week runs from Oct. 18-25. The eight-night event showcases two dozen local restaurants. Diners can choose from three-course, fixed-price dinner menus for $35, $45 or $55 depending on the restaurant. Menus often include three options each for appetizer, entrée and dessert. Britannia Arms is donating 50% of proceeds all day long on Sept. 27 to the Capitola Wharf Enhancement Project (an all-volunteer community group). Breakfast starts at 10:30 a.m., followed by lunch and dinner. The group is raising funds to enhance the city of Capitola’s Wharf Resiliency and Public Access Project — creating extra features like picnic tables.

The shelves are clearing fast at the Lucky supermarket in Capitola, but not for the usual reasons. The store at 1475 41st Ave., the only Lucky in Santa Cruz County, is scheduled to permanently close its doors when the clock strikes 5 p.m. Thursday.

The Lucky grocery store at King’s Plaza Shopping Center on 41st Avenue and Capitola Road is closing on Aug. 31. New Leaf Community Markets is moving its current 41st Avenue store to this location sometime in 2024.
