Texas winter storm damage may not be covered by home warranties

Christopher Wood says he and his wife wouldn’t have purchased the home warranty a year ago had they known what they do now. After two days without heat or electricity because of February’s storms, Wood and his wife, Kelly Lohr, left their East Austin home to stay with his parents for a few days in Round Rock. When they returned, their tankless water heater was ruined. Wood says he signed up on OneGuard Home Warranties  web portal for a service call to the house and had to wait a week, until Feb. 26, for the company to send plumbers who finally had the time. The fee: $75.

Protestors: ERCOT should have to pay for the disaster it created

About 50 people gathered Sunday afternoon outside ERCOT’s campus in suburban Austin, demanding the nonprofit that controls about 85% of the Texas power grid take responsibility for the disastrous failure that plunged millions into darkness without heat or water. Hosted by the Party for Socialism and Liberation, Austin Stops Evictions and other groups, the protest at 7620 Metro Center Dr. called for the independent organization to be put under public control and be required to pay for the public crisis it created. “This is the first and hopefully there will be more to come,” said Rachel Tucker, a 36-year-old organizer form San Antonio. “The people know now that ERCOT and the government don’t have the public’s interest in mind.”

Animal shelter staff put pets before themselves in Texas winter storm

Lucy Fernandez scrambled to create the emergency Facebook page for local pet owners and supporters on Valentine’s Day, when the city of Austin’s Animal Center had been closed to the public for months and bad winter weather, worse than most imagined, was on its way. In a matter of hours, more than 1,000 strangers joined, often linking up by hashtag and ZIP codes, to get pet food, water and supplies to those nearby who posted a need. Not long after, Fernandez and other employees at Austin Pets Alive, found themselves sleeping at a hotel, and then at the shelter itself  while trying to feed, medicate and clean up after dozens of shelter animals without water or power.
