Posted on July 21, 2021. In a speech delivered on July 8, U.S. President Joe Biden, in justifying the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, said, “We did not go to Afghanistan to nation-build, and it’s the right and responsibility of the Afghan people alone. We went to bring Osama bin Laden to the gates of hell” and “to eliminate al-Qaida’s capacity to deal with more attacks from that territory.” Anyone who looks at what was said in Washington by the George W. Bush administration during...

UK Labour Party’s latest purge and the myth of its “socialist transformation” A senior Labour source told the Daily Mirror, which broke the story, “Under [former Labour leader Jeremy] Corbyn those from the far-left fringes with poisonous beliefs and warped world-views were welcomed into the party. Keir [Starmer, the current Labour leader] is right to stamp out anti-Semitism and toxic extremism and get the party back into the decent mainstream of Labour values… We need to be fighting...

The nationalist diatribe of a Left Party leader—a review of the new book by Sahra Wagenknecht Part two ( “The Self-Righteous”), the latest book by Sahra Wagenknecht, is a völkisch-nationalist diatribe. Wagenknecht, a leading member of the Left Party, rages venomously against cosmopolitanism and cultural openness while promoting protectionism and a strong state. She denounces migrants and refugees as wage depressors, st rikebreakers and foreign cultural elements, and seeks to drive a wedg...

Gonzalez Plessmann says: The turn to the right has occurred both in economic and political terms. Regarding the economy, we have seen a range of measures implemented with the aim of attracting private capital at the expense of social rights. For example: * Privatisations have been occurring since 2015, either openly (via the handing over of agricultural land or nationalised companies) or in hidden form (via strategic associations or mixed companies). The anti-blockade law passed by the Nation...

The New Faces of Fascism: Populism and the Far Right,[1] which examines various theories of European fascism historically, is the second part (History in the Present) in a series. It is more interesting than the first (The Present as History), which analyzes the phenomenon of right-wing populism in contemporary Europe (which Traverso calls “postfascism”). Traverso is a historian, and so his knowledge and background as a historian are expertly applied to an analysis of fascism as a historica...

The 50 Year Argument,” a 2014 documentary film on the history and influence of The New York Review of Books, opens, as one critic put it, “with a tender and hard-hitting monologue about the subjectivity of journalistic stories due to the impossibility of the human mind being able to objectively record and store memories from our lives.” Scorses’s film is far more exciting than the above sentence may indicate. It captures a time in New York when left wing radical chic was practicall...

Tucker Carlson wished MSNBC a happy birthday on the networks 25th anniversary.  TUCKER CARLSON: MSNBC — the TV network, not the Schedule Three pharmaceutical — has a birthday today. The channel is 25 years old. That’s hard to believe, especially for those of us who remember the day it was born. Even at this advanced age, there are a lot of misconceptions about MSNBC. The first is that all of its anchors have been accused by a sitting president of murdering a young woman in a congression...
