He gave a very competent performance tonight. one of the things working with candidates is when theyre in a weak political position, sometimes they confuse volume and loudness with strength. thats what i felt the first half of the speech that he was willing himself to demonstrate strength and confidence, but he did it with optimism. that is the rare gift a president has. the president is the only guy who can say, were going to some place better, follow me. i think its going to help him and the d...

Strength and confidence, but he did it with optimism. that is the rare gift a president has. the president is the only guy who can say, were going to some place better, follow me. i think its going to help him and the democrats. the policy was, i thought, too small for the moment. >> we are awaiting the gop response. was it less throwing down the gauntlet to republicans? >> i think we heard a lot of people say he would be defiant. it wasnt defiant. he drew lines, but he attempted to say lets wor...

Able to get immigration done. i think its very important and i think that if, as the president said, if it was actually presented to us in the house, i think members would vote for it. but its got to be presented. and i think thats a very, very important issue. its interesting when that issue came up in a speech, my republican colleagues sat down. theres a whole segment of our population that wants to be included in the society and be a significant part. so i think thats a very important piece. ...

Personal relationship between president obama and many republicans on the hill, but its not even close to that. theres sort of an outright animosity. president obama would say its mostly one sided, its mostly republicans aimed at him. what it speaks to is that were talking about the budget conference and maybe getting something big done. the lack of relationship and the outright animosity, i think, really makes that very difficult to imagine. >> all right. dave, peter, and chris, thank you so mu...
