LOWVILLE â Being âput out to pastureâ is both symbolically, and for horses, literally, what happens when one is no longer âuseful.â
Thatâs if a horse is lucky. Many old or sick horses end up at auctions that lead to much less idyllic ends, unless a family like the Dietrichs of Rice Road in the town of Lowville have anything to do with it.
âI guess I think of us as more of a retirement home than a rescue,â said Mickey Dietrich of his familyâs small, 2.2-acre hobby farm, Hyder Rock Ranch.
For Mr. Dietrich, massive work horses have the most allure.

WATSON, N.Y. (WWNY) - Some have long, floppy ears and others have very unique markings.
These are some of the dogs that can be found at the Lewis County Humane Society.
But not all of these furry friends come from the North Country.
Lewis County has teamed up with the Herkimer County Humane Society to rescue dogs from kill shelters in Tennessee.
“Oh it’s phenomenal, I love doing this. This is probably the best part of the job is being able to save the dogs that don’t have anywhere else to go and are at risk. So, it’s just great,” said shelter manager Amber Zehr.
