Stubb emerges as presidential frontrunner also in poll by HS

Alexander Stubb (NCP) has established himself as the candidate to beat in the race to become the next president of Finland, according to recent polls by both Helsingin Sanomat and YLE. Helsingin Sanomat on Wednesday reported that Stubb has ousted Pekka Haavisto (Greens) from the top spot of its presidential poll with a seven-percentage-point bump in support.

Finland to close four border-crossing points on eastern border on Saturday

The Finnish government on Thursday announced it has decided to close the border-crossing points in Imatra, Niirala, Nuijamaa and Vaalimaa as of 18 November 2023. The closures mean applications for international protection will only be accepted on the eastern border at the more northern border-crossing points of Salla and Vartius.

Green League would raise tax on pensions, receives no support from other parties

The Green League on Wednesday proposed that the tax rate on pensions exceeding 13,500 euros a year be raised by 0.52 percentage points. In effect, the raise would mean that pensions would rise by 4.7 instead of 5.7 per cent at the beginning of next year, said Atte Harjanne, the chairperson of the Green Parliamentary Group.
