Gov. David Ige said Tuesday he will not mandate booster shots for travelers coming to the islands, an idea he said last week he was still considering. Ige said he made the decision based on declining COVID-19 cases counts in Hawaiʻi, the continental U.S. and Europe.

In his address, Gov. Ige announced that given recent revenue projections, he is asking the Hawaiʻi State Legislature to return some of those dollars to taxpayers. “We want to issue refund checks of $100 for every taxpayer and for each of their dependents. For a family of four, that would mean an extra $400. In this way, we’ll also inject $110 million back into our economy,” said Gov. Ige.

Hawaiʻi Gov. David Ige delivered his final State of the State address to the state Legislature on Jan. 24, 2022. Ige said his goals are to steer Hawaiʻi through the pandemic, strengthen families and communities, and move toward full economic recovery.

The state saw an average of 4,600 cases per day this week, but Department of Health Director Libby Char says hospitalizations are still manageable.
