Marking its 1,000th Martian day on the Red Planet, NASA’s Perseverance rover recently completed its exploration of the ancient river delta that holds evidence of a lake that filled Jezero Crater billions of years ago.

NASA's Perseverance rover hit a big milestone today (Dec. 13) — 1,000 Mars days, or sols, on the Red Planet.

Now at 1,000 days on Mars, the mission has traversed an ancient river and lake system, collecting valuable samples along the way.

While China's rover investigated the dune soakings, Perseverance explored the remains of a powerful torrent.

New images taken by the rover’s main camera show two mosaics of course sediment grains and tall, curving layers of rock that suggest the river once flowed powerfully.

The Perseverance rover has captured new images that appear to reveal geologic evidence of a fast-flowing river that fed into Jezero Crater, the site of an ancient Martian lake.

The discovery was made due to Perseverance’s Mastcam-Z capturing of the rover's hundreds of images.
