Scottish Lib Dems open nominations for new leader to replace Willie Rennie

Willie Rennie stepped down after a decade in charge of the party in Scotland. One of his fellow Holyrood party colleagues will take on the role as the current party rules stipulate it must be an MSP that leads the party. The nomination period will be open until Friday 20th August. Candidates must get 10% support from the Scottish Parliamentary party and are also required to obtain the support of 30 ordinary members from more than 5 local parties. Alistair Carmichael MP, Scottish deputy leader, will be the party’s interim leader until a successor is elected. Party convenor Sheila Ritchie said: “Willie Rennie has been a fantastic leader for the past ten years. I know all of our members will join with me in thanking him for his hard work, dedication, and patience.

If that split was more polarised there is a case for that position, but it isn’t, and all the while the perceived injustices and constraints continue, then there will always be a demand for radical change.

Believe it or not, more than 20 years ago, there were so many Scottish Liberal Democrats they were part of Scotland’s government and deputy first minister. Heading into the 2021 election, there were just five LibDem MSPs - and none in the west of Scotland. They remain one of four parties to stand in constituencies. But does Scotland want politicians in the middle ground anymore? In the second of our leader profiles, we quizzed Willie Rennie, who has led the LibDems for 10 years in Scotland. From start to finish, Mr Rennie argues his party is and can be different from others. He insists they would put recovery first, more so than other parties who claim the same.
