Taipei, April 19 (CNA) A shipment of fresh strawberries from Japan's Tochigi prefecture was seized at the border due to excessive levels of pesticide residue, the Taiwan Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said Tuesday.

On the same day, the FDA also announced a list of 21 items that failed the test, which included batches of fresh apples imported from the U.S., fresh strawberries and Hami melon from Japan, Chinese red dates, and green asparagus from Thailand that were found to have excessive pesticide residue, CNA reported.

Two shipments of avocados imported from the US by Costco Taiwan were seized at the border due to elevated levels of cadmium, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said yesterday.
A shipment of 990kg of fresh avocados from Riverside, California-based Index Fresh Inc was found to contain 0.19 milligrams of the heavy metal cadmium per kilogram of avocados (mg/kg), while a shipment of 1,423.8kg from Oxnard, California-based Mission Produce Inc was found to contain 0.06mg/kg both higher than the maximum permitted level of 0.05mg/kg.
The FDA said that seized products are either returned to their country of origin or destroyed.

Taipei, May 11 (CNA) Two shipments of avocados imported from the United States by Costco Taiwan were recently seized at Taiwan s border for containing higher than permitted levels of cadmium, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said Tuesday.
A shipment of 990 kilograms of fresh avocados from California-based global avocado marketer Index Fresh Inc. and another of 1,423.8 kg from American company Mission Produce Inc. were found to contain 0.19 mg/kg and 0.06 mg/kg, respectively, of the heavy metal cadmium, both higher than the maximum permissible level of 0.05 mg/kg.
