Story City's Knotwater Barbecue's sauce is inspired by regional BBQ

Ames Tribune James Beem of Story City has been hooked on creating his own barbecue sauce for many years. The exuberant response he got from customers while it was a hobby led him to consider making a business of it. Now, despite obstacles created by COVID-19, Beem has his Knotwater Barbecue Company products on the shelves of several central Iowa retailers. Beem pulls from different regions of the country for inspiration. “I'm a fan of regional barbecue. Kansas City has their style. North Carolina has two or three different styles to them. Texas has a style,” Beem said. “I tried to combine all of those different flavors into one bottle” — his Knotwater's original.

Iowa business Joygrow mushrooms' niche market grows during pandemic

Ames Tribune Joygrow mushrooms — a small, niche-market, Iowa business — has been finding strength through the pandemic by connecting with other businesses, like area restaurants that use its local produce. “I really want to bring awareness to the network of other businesses that make my business possible,” owner Aaron Johnson said, “especially in this time now when everybody is truly struggling. I want to encourage people to support local by eating and buying local.” Joygrow’s mushroom production has increased to about 150 pounds per week, up from approximately 25 pounds per week when Johnson first started the company in 2015. He’s had an emphasis on diversifying the offerings, and right now, has between a dozen and 15 strains of species in production.

Four stores have already been offering the rapid testing option where patients get results in 1-2 hours after completing the swab test. Hy-Vee also administers the PCR COVID-19 test which requires 3-5 business days before results are known. The new rapid antigen testing is being administered through an outdoor, drive-thru process. PCR tests are conducted the same way. Hy-Vee is currently searching for more than 1,000 pharmacy technicians to assist with testing, and with COVID-19 vaccinations, once they become available.
