MANCHESTER â Each year, more than 1,000 fragrant peony blooms in Hildeneâs Formal Garden at the Lincoln Familyâs Manchester estate draw visitors from far and wide, when the floral beauties reach their peak during the first two weeks of June.
The garden, designed in 1908 by President Lincolnâs granddaughter, Jessie Lincoln, for her mother, Mary Harlan Lincoln, is a must see year-round, but is particularly popular late spring when the peonies are in bloom.
The pattern is that of a stain glass window; the privet representing the leading, the flowers the glass. As a young woman, Jessie had seen such windows in the cathedrals of Europe as well as the parterre design in gardens she discovered during her travels. Archival documents suggest that Robert Lincoln collaborated with his daughter in bringing the familyâs Vermont garden to life.

MANCHESTER â Challenged to reflect on one of the âunalienable rightsâ in the Declaration of Independence, students from across Vermont have won recognition in the prestigious Lincoln Essay Contest, administered by Hildene, the Lincoln Family Home.
Among the winners were two students from Bennington County: Sienna Halstead of The Dorset School, whose entry took first place in Region Three, which includes Addison, Rutland and Bennington counties, and Josephine Monder of Long Trail School in Dorset, whose entry tied for third place in Region Three.
One hundred and twenty-four students submitted essays anonymously to a diverse panel of judges who assessed them on content, the studentsâ understanding of the subject and their ability to convey that understanding using good writing practices â all in 500 words or fewer.

MANCHESTER â Hildene educators are offering two programs designed to be held on school grounds or for homeschoolers at Hildene. Both are held outside. All Hildene science education programs support the Next Generation Science Standards.
Students in grades 2-5 will discover how colder temperatures and shorter days bring about many changes in the world around them in the âWinter Adaptations: Coping with the Coldâ program. While investigating forest life through observation and exploration, they will discover the ways plants and trees adapt to winterâs challenges and learn the remarkable survival strategies and complex language of calls of Vermontâs familiar black-capped chickadee. Weather permitting, students will also take an up-close look at the unique designs of snowï¬akes and examine the processes that form them.
