Former PNG Defence Commander, General Jerry Singirok, believes the creation of a Pacific Islands regiment within the ADF would be the best way to advance military links in the region.
The idea has been floated during an inquiry by the Australian Parliament s committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade.
Under the proposal a regiment of Pacific Islanders would be created in the Australian Defence Force, in a bid to forge closer military links between Pacific island nations.
Supporters of the idea envision a the regiment conducting humanitarian and disaster relief missions, as well as peace keeping operations.
MPs on the committee stopped short of making a formal recommendation, but they have urged the government to give the plan full consideration.
