Nbcs sarah dalof starts our coverage tonight. Reporter on the first day of a newly established route monday morning, tragedy aboard amtrak 501. Things started to tip over and as it was going around and then all of a sudden just ended up on side, and everything went dark and stuff started flying around and that was it. Then it stopped. Reporter a stunned motorist watched the train derail. One car falling to the interstate below, another dangling from the overpass. I was right in front of it really. Nerve racking, kind of sick to your stomach after seeing this right now. Reporter multiple vehicles were hit by the falling train car as others came crashing into the pile. The people that were in all the vehicles, even though when you see the pictures, its pretty horrific. At this point nobody in any of vehicles was fatal. Reporter 77 passengers and five crew members were on board the train which was headed south from seattle to portland. Witnesses scrambled trapped survivors and help emerge

While the ntsb works to determine this crash it brings back memories of the crash that happened here in that Port Richmond just two years ago. Amtrak train 188 derailed in may 2015. Eight people were killed and more than 200 others were injured in that incident. The train was traveling 106 miles an hour in a 50 Miles Per Hour speed zone. Investigators determined that the engineer was distracted by an incident with a nearby train. In september, a judge dismissed charges against that engineer. And we do have a reporter out there, jackie ward on the scene, and she will have a live report coming up shortly. But in the meantime if you are typically a driver that takes 880 in the morning, southbound direction all lanes shut down at 66. You will need to use an alternate. Chpall traffic getting off at 66. Big rigs can use 580. Heres a live look at the crash. You can see a lot of activity. Traffic on the left corner of your screen you can see starting to be diverted off at 66. So a big backup. Avoid 880 if you can. Northbound we arent seeing delays. Traffic is moving along right at the limit. Another accident shut down 3 of 4 lanes on northbound 101 at palo alto. Now you can see they are diverting the majority of that traffic off on 66, but this is a surface street right before that so you need to just avoid southbound 880 entirely. If your commute is from the east bay dont even bother jumping on, try to take surface if you can all the way to your morning commute. Start calling your boss because they had estimated this to reopen at around 7 00 a. M. According to chp but judging by these delays even if they do reopen some of those lanes you can still expect to see some of that backup and traffic delay.
