The Wombles Credit:  Moviestore/Shutterstock I first heard about the Wombles when my agent, Liz Channon, told me that the BBC was making a new children’s show. It was 1972 and I met Ivor Wood, who had been one of the animators on The Magic Roundabout, and was shown the little studio at Film Fair, a small production company based off Marylebone High Street. There was a tabletop set with 12in-high Wombles, the studio was lit and they were shooting one frame, moving a character around, and then shooting another frame. He told me that Bernard Cribbins was going to narrate it and then asked, ‘Would you like to write the tune for this?’ and I thought, ‘I’d love to!’
