And there’s good reason the idea of such a system hasn’t become a reality in 50 years: It’s frightfully expensive and extremely complex.

So, imagine how unsurprising it is that the recent federal budget badly underestimated the cost of establishing national daycare. It sets up the provinces with both a financial shortfall and failed expectations. Worse yet, the real losers of an ill-advised national system are parents and children.
