Standing in his living room, Harold Crocker was eager to exhibit his ventriloquist dollsâwhich he refers to as âfiguresâ instead of âdummiesââand converse in different charactersâ voices, wielding them almost as an extension of his arm.
A ventriloquist for close to 70 years, he, along with other popular performers, was recently included in Bryan W. Simonâs new book of ventriloquy trivia, âIâm No Dummy Every Day: 365 Days of Ventriloquial Oddities, Curiosities, and Fun Facts.â
âI would say to people: âJeez, I play with dolls.â They would look at me and say âWhat?â and I say âYeah, I play with dolls,ââ said Mr. Crocker, in between introducing and bickering with the eight figures he was bringing in and out of the room.
